Alejo introduced similar bills in 2011 and 2012 that both died because of opposition by Republican members and business lobbyists, who called the proposal a "job killer."

Alejo's chief of staff, Marva Diaz, told The Huffington Post that this bill is stronger because the two leaders of the Legislature have been added as co-authors: Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles).

Perez disputed the claim that raising the minimum wage would reduce jobs. ?The real winner here is the economy. A $10 hour minimum wage boosts earnings by $4,000 a year and will put $2.6 billion dollars back into the hands of workers,? Pérez said in a statement. ?This is money that will be spent at grocery stores, on school supplies and invested in education, and that ultimately strengthens the recovery and ensures California?s job market continues growing faster than the rest of the nation.?

California's minimum wage is among the highest in the country, although it hasn't been raised since 2008. AB 10 would raise the minimum wage in two separate one-dollar increments: from $8 per hour today to $9 per hour, effective July 1, 2014, and from $9 per hour to $10 per hour, effective Jan. 1, 2016.

This will only open the door to MORE taxes for those people... so you theoretically make more, but at the end, it will probably be the same amount

What's funny is California is so diverse, not just with its people but also its geography. The farming valleys are absolutely massive and make up a huge part of the country's agricultural output. Raising minimum wage in poor valley towns to make up for the high cost of Los Angeles living does not make much sense to me? basically sounds like the inner-city politicians have way more power than the rural politicians (which I would guess is fairly common), but those rural businesses are certainly going to take a hit.

They should put up a new sign on the Tijuana entry. "Hello migrant workers, we welcome you!"

There have been people for decades that have wanted to split the state in 3 states. When I had my house in Shasta Lake California. I could see two glaciers from my front yard.
$15 a hour in the area was considered a good job and you could buy a home with that kind of income.

In ideal world. In reality - there are not enough of quality people to fill all the job openings. Meaning that some percentage of work force do not even meet minimum wage requirements, but there are not enough of people to replace them all.

These issues are about what we expect of people. What society expects of people. What standards a society has. Paying a minimum wage because the law dictates that it is the minimum you are required to pay, you end up with masses demanding a wage increase.

Paying a living wage and you end up with masses who have no need for welfare. And while some may squander their wages, working more and living frugally for a duration would allow those persons to catch up and become less likely to repeat the same behavior because they learned a valuable lesson in the process.

If you walk ten steps to the left or right of your bloated self importance, you might understand the concept of reaping what you sow.

Now, why is it necessary to pay workers the bare minimum?

the most likely answer is A) you are determined to make more than the bare minimum B) you are an asshole C) you and other assholes like you lack any foresight as to how this will yield economic consequences in the long run, to which you will grumble about in Internets Forums -and- D) all of the above.
