It looks and sounds like the guy comes around to the side of the car and starts hitting the window on the driver's side. at that point the cop had 2 choices. Drive away and leave the guy there or shoot him. He can't leave. So the leaving option is off the table.

I am very slow to side with cops on use of deadly force issues; however, this cop had to
open his car door or roll down his window in order to try using a taser or mace.

The cop tried to withdraw by putting the car in reverse, the guy kept coming.

The cop gave him a chance, then the cop did what cops do when you put them in these positions. Looks justified to me.

backing up the car was the first thing he did and he backed up constantly for a good while, probably to try and give the kid a chance to ease up.

i'm far from the type to side with police officers but this was a clear "you gonna get shot" scenario.

did you not watch the video? He was slowly backing up and the guy was following him, swinging away. How far should he back up? Should he go around the block? How fast should he back up? We don't see behind him. We have no idea how much space or road there is for him to back up into.

I'm the kind of guy who feels the cops should only use lethal force when it is absolutely needed and to me, based on what I can see in that video it was needed. A bat is a serious weapon. I wouldn't fuck with him. The guy seems like he is clearly out of his mind. I personally wouldn't wait until he was bashing my head in before I acted and I wouldn't run away and let him take off and maybe hurt someone else.

As I said above, the problem is you don't know if anyone else is in danger. Do you think it is a good idea to leave a crazy guy who is so angry he will attack a police car wandering around a neighborhood? We also have no idea what the call was. We don't know that there isn't someone laying in yard or in the street somewhere that he has already beat half to death.

If he left and someone else got hurt the police department would be sued for an extraordinary amount.

Police procedure normally and in training they tell you that your not supposed to stay in your car to get out at all costs or you could be killed. If the guy with the bat had a gun the officer would be dead. If you watch the video you'll see at the end he got out at the right time to get off a shot. My cousin is a cop and they tell you to not stay in your car. That's a whacked out video tho, that guy was stupid or high on drugs.

He was breaking windows. That is not a capital offense and no excuse for shooting a minor. The police protected himself obviously, but I call it bad judgement.

Just so I make sure I understand you clearly. You think a guy smashing a window out of a cop car like that guy was is just a guy breaking windows?
