Yep. It looks like he panicked. He had good reason too. The kid was crazy with a baseball bat. It can be a lethal weapon easily. But I don't think the officer is cut out to be a cop. Pepper spray or tazer would have been better or a retreat and wait for backup if the situation didn't warrant action (other civilians at risk). I wouldn't press charges against the cop but I think he needs desk duty.

I am very slow to side with cops on use of deadly force issues; however, this cop had to
open his car door or roll down his window in order to try using a taser or mace.
That would expose him to the guy swinging the bat, so the cop is "trapped" or has
to flee in the car. It is not his job nor is he required to flee; just an option.
When the suspect came to the driver side of the patrol car and swung the bat he forced
an option.
