There be hard core pirates amongst us

Surfers? It goes without saying, but naïve old me never thought there'd be hard core pirates amongst us....

A few weeks ago, I made a thread on how to combat piracy and the thread evolved into some great ideas with a lot of interaction.

Now, I never (never say never) do anything to piss anyone off and even help a lot of people out while offering free services and stuff. The geolocation service gets lots of kind comments, and donations to help keep it free and well, generally I've never experienced bad shit.

Well, a few days ago, the IP I was using in the anti-piracy thread came under massive attack. A full-on distributed dos attack coming from zombie servers as well as cloud services - some 3000+ IPs all coming down on my poor server

The attack was ridden out and amazon and rackspace (whose cloud services were used) were notified and the zombies dropped at the switch.

Of course I've no proof, but in the 12 years I've run dedicated servers, I've always flown well enough under the radar to attract attention. The week my server is used publicly to put up some anti-piracy ideas, I get hit over the head with a concrete beam.

All I can assume is I pissed off some hard core pirates and this was their way of saying GFY.

So, beware folks.

Sorry to hear that Andy.

I had a feeling something bad was going to come from that thread. Too many fucking dirt bags and haters around here.

One more reason there needs to be a safe area (locked down) where people have to prove who they are, what they do, and have a few people vouch for them. Not perfect, but it's a start. All of us talking in public amongst the thieves will back fire on all of us.

Have you seen some of the posters attitude towards chasing pirates?

Some are very clearly anti anything curbing piracy.

Thats lame.

But you do know a lot about a lot when it comes to Piracy and if we were not on the same side, i wouldn't want you educating the people we attack too.

You are always a great read and i can see why you are reped as much as you are.

You're a douchbag for labeling people who don't agree with one way of going about things as pro-piracy.

My guess is that it's a coincidence - DDOS-ing anyone probably takes time and $$ to set up or at least carry some risks no matter how minimal... and to tell me that someone did that just because of a forum thread?

Thanks for the great information and I am sorry that they went after you like that. Freaking sucks that people as helpful as you have to pay for educating the masses.

I really do not like the idea of a private area, I kind of find the idea to be a bit limiting. However, I have to agree with you on this. Having an area where verified members might be a good idea

I don't think so, as it targeted the very IP from the start that I use for my adult-oriented stuff. When that was black holed to save the server, it went onto my geo-API IP.

Those two IPs have only ever been linked here.

Thanks for the kind words folks - all is back to normal now.

The fight will still go on and I'll develop what was developed in that thread to become a "package" of sorts that anyone who wants to can implement. It will be a good few weeks though, since working on stuff from that thread let me slip behind in other areas that now need my attention.

When it's ready though, I'll post in that thread - so if you're interested, keep it bookmarked.

People have done that before because of message board fighting, banning, bullshit.

It is not new, or uncommon champ.

Couple of guys I know call GFY "pirate central"

I guess you found out why, though it's pretty easy to see from a lot of the posts on here that there are many, many people on GFY who aren't really in the porn business to begin with. Makes sense that they would either sympathize with pirates because they love freeloading as surfers...or they are pirates themselves.

I too wish we had at least one area on GFY for only people that the mods here can verify are in the business. But of course clowns and pirates won't like that.

most of the big brograms are behind the very sites you all bitch about.

better not to piss up that tree, just on the leg of some insignificant gfy poster who doesn't run any sites anyway ...

Unlucky - yeah, you're right there. Why ddos a poor dev server I've no idea - too much of a coincidence in my book.

In any case, it gives me more steam to develop this and get it out amongst the masses to use.

Call me paranoid, but development is going away from that server to a safe location

most of the big tubes and pirate boards are run by the biggest programs. some overtly and some covertly. they can show they are in the industry and get access to your secret forum. what is that going to stop or prove?

That would be correct fine sire.

There is plenty going on in the shadows of this industry that would curl the toes of some of the SHEEPle if they actually knew who the wizards were behind the curtains.

I'll email you some pics when i've got around to doing them. I've had another idea that would sit well as a board topic preview image.

Probably best keeping it less public anyway as you don't want people to know what can't be detected.

And then there are guys who make such comments and it lands them on the suspicious list.

What we have are people taking action, and people who are not taking action other than hating on those who are, offering NO solutions otherwise. Those who would be considered the latter need to just sit on the sidelines on issues of piracy, where they can safely cheer for either team and no one on the field can really hear them.

I never have a doubt one of the main sources of information for pirates is GFY, it's a given. However, I'd bet not only that they aren't hidden, but one or more of those pirates are people that "belong to the business", or at least that post here on an usual basis.

My bot is, as we speak, sending out DMCA notices to have them taken down...

wow that really sucks! I agree 100% with dwb about having a place where we can be among the ones that are in this biz and not just every dick tom and harry! I think it should be set up so if you're in this biz and are known you would be in, if you're in this biz and not well known well you're out!

I've had lots of contact from people from that thread and while none of them can be considered as the top crust, they are certainly the ones who are fed up with the current situation and want to do something to protect their own rights.

Unlike the big boys, I'm not in this to profit from racketeering, or else I would never have given out step-by-step instructions on how to lock down your streams. It went one better in developing something that allowed someone to search for stolen images to help in DMCA notice preparation. Maybe at some point I'll figure out how to do the same with videos, or even better still, we as a community will figure it out with available technology, maybe not.

In any case, putting the power to the "regular joe" to combat this problem is what is needed, and tbh, I never realised it until I made that piracy thread (which I only made because of something Robbie said in one of the Lightspeed threads)

I think though I learnt a valuable lesson in not being so damn public with my ideas! Which is a shame, cos that thread is a classic example of what can be achieved through bouncing ideas around.

If it wasn't for *fear* of reprisal, I'd go a lot further in public

The attack was ridden out and amazon and rackspace (whose cloud services were used) were notified and the zombies dropped at the switch.

Of course I've no proof, but in the 12 years I've run dedicated servers, I've always flown well enough under the radar to attract attention. The week my server is used publicly to put up some anti-piracy ideas, I get hit over the head with a concrete beam.

All I can assume is I pissed off some hard core pirates and this was their way of saying GFY.

So, beware folks.
Wasn't there a ddos attack on some of the lawyers that were filing the DCMA torrent suits?

If everybody is using there own versions/parameters it makes it that much harder for the pirates to counter.

A few people from different parts of multiple industries with different backgounds can come up with some amazing concepts.

ps. I dropped you an email the other day with some more stuff to confuse you!

Well, in a forum about "simply business" discussing things/solutions to things that are problematic to this industry, I don't see how I should have expected to be "playing with fire"

DWB is right though, things like the educational series forum and the piracy forums should be locked down (hell, fee paying why not) as they *only* pertain to those in this industry.

Coincidence? Probably, but I feel humbled to be one targeted ahead of attacks on RCN, now looks like Hustler?

Well, actually I'm pretty pissed that XBiz didn't run a press relase saying "small-time porn peddler targetted by xxxxxx for trying to avert porn piracy"

Something smells fishy anyway.

Yeah, I've had my shit attacked for no reason other than offering services, or making a snide remark. People still treat the internet like the wild west, since it's so difficult to enforce retribution.

Glad you had it taken care of. I hate it when I don't have a good enough relationship with a network to have them 'just handle it' since they're obviously not going to give me enable.

When it's ready though, I'll post in that thread - so if you're interested, keep it bookmarked.
Sounds awesome.

There are forums I have seen where Russian hackers advertise the bot networks they use for DDoS attacks. It can be turned on pretty quick and is not that expensive.
