Surfers? It goes without saying, but naïve old me never thought there'd be hard core pirates amongst us....
A few weeks ago, I
made a thread on how to combat piracy and the thread evolved into some great ideas with a lot of interaction.
Now, I never (never say never) do anything to piss anyone off and even help a lot of people out while offering free services and stuff. The geolocation service gets lots of kind comments, and donations to help keep it free and well, generally I've never experienced bad shit.
Well, a few days ago, the IP I was using in the anti-piracy thread came under massive attack. A full-on distributed dos attack coming from zombie servers as well as cloud services - some 3000+ IPs all coming down on my poor server
The attack was ridden out and amazon and rackspace (whose cloud services were used) were notified and the zombies dropped at the switch.
Of course I've no proof, but in the 12 years I've run dedicated servers, I've always flown well enough under the radar to attract attention. The week my server is used publicly to put up some anti-piracy ideas, I get hit over the head with a concrete beam.
All I can assume is I pissed off some hard core pirates and this was their way of saying GFY.
So, beware folks.
