where does the fan go on a new style cpu heatsink?
hi
i want to overclock my cpu and need to change my stock cooler for something a bit more hi-spec. i'm looking at getting a Prolimatech Megahalems like this: ![]() i've only ever used stock coolers with the fan stuck on top in the past. i gather that you have to use a decent quality 120mm case fan with these. is the fan mounted to the cooler or just fitted to the case and that's sufficient? any advice appreciated. thanks in advance |

Get the Corsair h50 watercooler. Easy install and takes up very little space. It's the only way I go these days -- I'm building a system with it today, actually.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-010-_-Product I wouldn't put that other thing in a case. It's a fucking Buick.

I worked designing & building electrical appliances for too many years. Can't get away from being paranoid about electricity + a water leak

It's the chance you have to take, for the efficiency of water cooling. They have a pretty low failure rate, from what I know.

Actually, I have a bigger heatsink like that and my fan clips onto the side of it and blows through it.

The fan needs to keep the system cool, so that it does not overheat.

also water cooling is a lot safer now with non conductive water liquid coolant.

I ran water cooling for a bit. Tried to add a VGA block to the loop, and it started leaking. No matter what I did (recut the tubing, redo the clamps etc) it kept leaking. No damage since I only had the pump on for a couple of seconds each time, but it turned me off WC. Made me think about what could have happened if the leak had started by itself, when I wasn't around...

If you don't know basic stuff like that, good luck installing that monster by yourself.

i've never bought a pc in my life, i always built my own and have lots of experience with building/fixing pc's. its just i've never used anything but stock cooling before, so it won't be any problem at all.

Ok but asking this made you look noobish. Just looking around at random reviews or pics of tower heasinks, you should know where the fan goes. This particular heatsink doesn't come with a fan, but it comes with clips to attach a fan. If you don't overclock you can run it passive, provided the fan at the back of your case is at least 120mm. But you should slap a fan on it if you plan of overclocking.

![]() when i decided to upgrade my cooling, i looked at benchmarks and the one i posted looked good. but the only pics i could find of it were without a fan hence my question. i've always only ever OC'd by 10% before so have never needed anything more than a stock cooler. i've bought the h50 water cooled one that someone sugested now anyway. |

it's just making extra noise... trust me!
I have cooler master hyper6+ and it's making quite a noise... I have bought it couple of years ago so I could OC my processor from 3.2GHz to 4GHz but noise level at 4GHz is pretty high then, and performance gain is not worth it... So better spend more cash on better CPU, faster memory, better mainboard than on this. Use CPU on default values and you'll be happy with it... And focus more on what and are doing with your CPU than how and what is your CPU doing, at what voltage, clock speed... etc...
