I've been working on a couple of his books here for quite a while now.... (like over a year)... i can usually read through a technical manual 3 inches thick in one day. but this Robbins stuff.... takes some absorbing and consideration.... he's either a genius or a complete nut. (no, it hasn't taken me a year to read a book.... i forget about it, then keep going back for another little slice).

interesting note... one of the family here worked with him for a few years.... everywhere he went. has nothing but the best things to say about the guy.

i don't live my life by any one book. maybe a compilation of specific books.... but tony robbins and the bible aren't in that lineup.

Tony is a personal friend of mine (believe it or not). Went to my 1st seminar of his - walking across fire - wayyyy back in '86. Worked for/with him for a couple years, at his seminars, even proof-read two of his books (Unlimited Power & Awaken The Giant Within).

Anything you wanna know, hit me up on ICQ.

The "key" to Tony - and any 'motivational speaker/Life Coach" - is to find what works FOR YOU and then run with it. Tony et al can throw 1001 things at you and ANY ONE can change/improve your life. Anyway, blah blah. Tony's great tho - and has sure gotten his shit together since when he first started out.

tony's just the latest addition here, i try to read a pretty wide variety of books... with the exception of the pointless ones like Stephen King or Anne Rice or whatever.

yeah, that's kind of what I was meaning.... it really takes a while to give what he's saying some consideration and whether or not to find a way to apply it. not like absorbing a technical manual.... that's easy, it's just raw information.

on topic, i read robbins' original book and liked it, i couldn't/didn't apply the principles though. i find napolean hill's "think & grow rich" easier for me to embrace and run with the principles. now that robbins has written so many books, i wouldn't know where to start.

Basically, what Tony does is 'dumb down' Heuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for the masses. So sometimes it's better to read the actual source material, or the guys who taught Tony as it were. But once you learn & absorb the differant techiques Tony teaches it's just putting yourself in the right mental 'state' that can allow your brain, your unconscious mind, to 'choose' the best course of action for you. Make sense? God, now I sound like Tony...

that was my initial assessment too.... but then it occurred to me, sometimes we need someone to point out the obvious.

no finer example than when someone freaks out because they can't find their sunglasses, and someone points out that they are on top of your head.

Master of the obvious may be true but you have to realize everyone can lose his/her way in life and something as simple as listening to a tape or reading a book can help get you back on track.

the guy used to make me laugh with his infomercials, while i was slaving away at a computer 18 hours a day. i no longer slave away, and i no longer watch his infomercials (though i'm not sure if they even exist anymore). thanks tony!!

anyhoo, i have a theory on these self-help books. the fact is, they do tend to work if you do the exercises, etc. that said, the exercises, if done correctly, are hard work. so really what you (we) learn is that hard work pays off, not the *principle* learned from the exercise.

Milton Erickson is the guy that inspired all of those guys. Bandler, Grinder, Robbins and many many others. "My Voice Will Go With You" is an interesting read on Erickson.

Some other books you might like, based on your reading list:

"The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge"
"A Brief History of Time"
"Ethics" by Baruch Spinoza

If you really want to get into some dense reading material, pick up anything by Carl Jung.

think and grow rich is my least fav Napoleon Hill release. I have 'your right to be rich' which is a series of lectures recorded in the 50's that pretty much rocks.

i'm sure those lectures are good. i find the original book provides me all the info i need to get busy, otherwise i find i get bogged down with the "how to" and neglect the actual "to do".
