A few Amerikans read horrible anti-communist shams like the Black Book of Communism. Obviously, we don?t expect Amerikan goobers to change their opinions anytime soon. MSH encourages our readers who are interested in history to take a look at the new scholarship. It is important to note that Stalin is still very popular in the third world and in ex-Soviet nations. In any case, MSH does not shape its line around popularity. MSH shapes its line around truth.

MSH upholds Mao Zedong?s verdict on Stalin that, in his historic context, he should be judged as 70% correct. This is just a way of saying that while Stalin made major errors, he should be upheld overall.

I then retract my thanks for gulags, killing Trotsky and turning what could have been a great country into a horrible authoritarian state tarnishing communism's good intentions forever.

Stalin did not stop the Nazi's. The Soviet soldiers and officers stopped the Nazi's. Do not even think that Stalin was some kind of military genius.

Stalin weakened the Soviet military by purging (executing) officers but stopped the purges when WW2 began.

Before ww2, Stalin was making more "mistakes" than Adolf Hitler. But during ww2, Stalin made less mistakes than Hitler. That is the only good thing I can say about Stalin.

However the main point to remember is that none of these so called "communist" states were actually communist at all. Dictatorships and oligarchies but not communist.

Where was the worker owned means of production? There wasn't any because these were state capitalist countries.

Some people (such as Stalin or Hitler) decide to do "whatever it takes" to achieve their goals. The result is they do more harm than good, much more harm than good.

In life, it's more important *what you dont do* than *what you do*.

If you dont achieve your goals and end up starving, homeless on the street, then you only hurt yourself and maybe (indirectly) some people in your family. But if you steal from/kill half of the people to benefit the other half of the people, then you are killing/destroying society ....... even if the goals are noble such as more jobs (for the survivors) or more food (for the survivors). That's why religion has been moderately successful and somewhat resilient. Most religions teach that following rules is more important than outcomes (getting what you want). Sports are similiar. Players who believe in "our victory,through any means" are promoting a system which leads to short-sighted selfishness and eventual destruction as players destroy each other to achieve their goals (win).
