Indeed, many scholars argue that it started even before that--the end of the Civil War. Before that time, it was generally understood that the phrase "United States" focused on the STATES. After Lincoln, the UNITED ie., federal entity took precedence.

I don't think it follows at all that because we have derived certain aspects of law or government from religion, that it makes government a religion. I suppose if you use a rather loose definition for religion you can follow this line of thought.

Again, I think the fraud part is a bit over the top.
