Even small time bureaucrats are a pain in the ass. I applied for a business license four or five weeks ago. After a couple of weeks I called about the status. I was told the lady that handles that department was not in and was given her voice mail number. I left a message, and she did not get back to me. I called multiple times over the next several days and nada. I finally drove down to city hall and was told that she would be back at 3:00. I went back at 3:00, spoke with her and she explained that she was behind on her work (no shit, she is never there), but she would take care of the matter that very day and I would have my license mailed to me within in few days. That was about two weeks ago. I don't feel comfortable about launching an advertising campaign without the license in hand. Patience is not one of my virtues.

Can you get away with using a p.o box in the county nearest the city you live in ?

I don't know what city you live in so I don't know the laws there.

Example.

I use to have a retail store in Sacramento County. I did not need a business license to run this biz just a sellers permit.

Just a suggestion since the city does not seem to want to handle this matter.

I understand now. I live in the city and they stated that I need a business license for a commercial website, so that is the route that I am taking. If my license does not arrive next week I will have to pay a visit to the ladies supervisor. I don't have a specific answer for your specific question. Thanks for the info.

I still have not received my license. I called today and, suprise, she was in her office. I told her it had been much longer than a few days and I still have not received my license. She put me on hold and when she got back to me she told me that I had not put an X for the location of my office in my home. To clearify, at one point I had to type a declaration stating the number of square feet my home is and draw a small diagram of my house. I did this and took it in to her. Today she told me that I did not put an X identifying the location of my office in my house. She did not previously tell me anything about an X and if I had not called today I would not have known anything about an X. I went down to city hall and drew my X. I asked her when I now could expect to receive my license and she said she was behind on her work but it should be within a couple of weeks. Whatever this lady is being paid she is highly overpaid.

Sounds like a typical overpaid freeloading government worker....

I am so glad I live in the county although I am going to have to fork out about $6000 dollars for a permit for a little over 1000 sq ft addition to the house.

That's what our contractor told us . I will know for sure when we apply for it in a few weeks .

By the way a 1000 square foot addition is quite an addition. As I am sure you are aware, many 2 bedroom houses are only 1200 square feet. You are going to need a really, really big, large screen TV for that size den?

We are adding on two larger bedrooms for the girls, another bathroom, dining room and a family room that we will use for games and the music equipment.

I bought a 36 inch on wednesday. That is large enough for me. I rather get a ping pong table or pool table...

After having been promised a couple of more times that the license would be mailed out and not receiving it, I finally went down to city hall with the attitude that I would leave there with my license in hand or I would be arrested for disturbing someone's peace. I went down yesterday and left with my license in hand.

If I recall correctly I had originally applied for the license in Oct '02. She did not even have the license typed up from then until yesterday.

Wow.. Almost four months to get the license. That's sounds a bit crazy if you are in a small town ..

OH , it took our designer almost that long to do our plans for our add on and it was supposedly only around 60 hours of work......
