Should Vegetarians Pay Lower Insurance Premiums?

Many studies have offered evidence that vegetarians lead longer, healthier lives. There is a mountain of evidence linking meat consumption to some of our nation's deadliest diseases. So why should we pay for other people's meat-consumption-caused heart attacks?

The financial logic behind offering lower insurance premiums depends a lot on trusting that these insured remain vegetarian. There's also the issue of verifying the veg claims of prospective insureds.

Very different from other readily verifiable "low risk pools" like engineers and certain types of academics and other occupations.

those studies shows that a very small percentage of vegetarians live longer. Most wanna be vegetarians ( wich outnumber the real vegetarians ) have a lack of needed nutrions, and vitamines.

the real question you should ask is, should YOU be paying for all the people who eat like shit, smoke cigs, drink beer everyday and then rack up 100,000 in heart transplant bills lol

yes, we should pay less, but so should YOU, stop paying for smokers and alcoholics livers and lungs!!!

I think lower premiums for non-smokers, etc, would be a good idea, but after speaking with my sister (who seriously researched what it would take to go vegan and remain healthy) most people don't have the time or resources to be a veggie and still meet their nutritional needs.
Hell, half the people I know who went veggie had serious health or even personality issues (a girl I know who did it for a year actually became very belligerent and moody until she started eating chicken and dairy again).

What would you do with a mountain hiker?

On one hand, in theory they would be healthier because they get a lot of exercise. On the other hand, they climb mountains a lot so the risk of falling and suffering serious injury skyrocket.

What to do, what to do...

Vegetarians most often just think they're healthier than their counter parts. It's mostly just ridiculous rubbish. The human body is certainly capable, in fact arguably designed, to eat a mixture of meats and plants. Plant proteins are also among the least useful proteins in building lean muscle mass.

Eat what you like, what works for you, but enough of the self righteous "I'm healthier than you!" bullshit. I'd wager that I'm in far better shape than 99.9% of vegetarians including all the posters in this thread. Stronger, faster, healthier and I eat a shit load of meats. In fact I eat small portions of beef, chicken and turkey every damned day.

Not to mention that Vegetrians tend to be big Soy heads and Soy has been linked to advanced brain disorders.

Quote:
A new study by researchers at North Carolina State University has cited that two hormone-like compounds linked to the consumption of soy-based foods not only trigger irreversible changes in the brain, but may also result in reproductive health problems.

dude you say you work out 4 hours a day, ummm i sure hope youre healthier than the rest of us lol

i never understand why someones personal diet choice upsets so many. Being a vegetarian is like the worst thing on the planet... lol

Some people are lactose intolerant, imagine that, human bodies reject COW MUCOS!!! IMAGINE IT!!!

For me, if i drink cow milk, i will be laying on my side hurting in pain, but i should stay away from Soy milk because weight lifters think it faggy. lol

People just don't know how to cook and eat good as vegetarians, I am convinced.

If you eat good in general, it will be easy to go vegetarian. But if you just chow on chicken and steak all day its harder no doubt. You have to like healthy food already, no fast food addicts either.

Before I was a vegetarian I already ate bowls of salads, soups, beans, pasta etc, so it was not difficult to switch. It was actually really easy to cut out meat, and the world has sooo many delicious foods to offer that do not consist of dead flesh.

I have more problems with people on disability and welfare that smoke and drink.

I think alot of those studies you refer to are skewed. Are they actually health meat eaters vs. vegetarians? Because I think the results would be more varied. There are tons of non vegetarians, myself included, who actually eat a very healthy and controlled died with meat as a part of it.

And to adjust insurance premiums well thats semi-classism. because that could open up the flood gates for so much other stuff...

Yes, that's exactly my point. Eating a healthy diet is only part of a healthy lifestyle. Just because somebody eats meat doesn't mean they eat less healthy than non meat eaters. We get it that you and Cherry are Vegetarians. All the power to you guys.

Nobody is upset or said it's the worst thing on the planet. In fact, this thread was obviously started with a bias that not eating meat makes you necessarily healthier. I don't see how responding to this sillyness represents hate for your diet.

Assuming everyone here are masters of finding information online I challenge you to
#1. discover what % of cows have Bovine Leukemia Virus
#2. discover what % of people in a recent study contain bovine leukemia Virus antibodies
#3. discover what % of cows have Bovine HIV

When you sit down for you next Leukemia AIDS burger you can marvel how healthy your diet is, or maybe some leukemia yogurt for those watching your weight.

The question you need to ask yourself is "Why do you think eating Animal Products is good for you, the world, the animals?" & "Why defending your eating habits inspires such great emotion?"

Your arteries are filled with pimples ready to burst at any moment, but you can't feel them because they contain no nerve endings. You're a walking grave yard of the animals you consume. Arterial disease isn't just in your heart, its in your eyes, ears, and even your cock, what do you think causes ED? CLOGGED & DISEASED ARTERIES. That should be something people on this board can understand.

Why do I think eating Animal Products are good for me? I was obviously designed or evolved in to it. I have teeth designed specifically for the purpose! More over, my Dietician includes meat in my diet. She's a Doctor and frankly I suspect she understands nutrition even better than you or I do.

You see, when you're tuning your body to elite levels, the science of nutrition becomes very important. Little things you probably don't know, like limiting your dead protein intakes (powders) to 30% or less of your daily protein intake. To mix up the types of proteins you have and when you have them, in other words not to eat the same proteins over and over at the same times each day.

I have to eat between 4500 and 5000 calories a day, with the lion share being proteins, then complex carbs and finally fats. I think it'd be tough to get the protein levels I require from vegetables alone.

I'm 35 years old and my standing heart rate is in the mid 50's. I run for up to an hour a day with a heart rate of 160 beats per minute. My Cholesterol is perfect, my blood pressure right in an ideal range and my body fat is very low. I'm going to go ahead and guess that my arteries are in fact not filled with pumples ready to burst at any moment. At least my Doctor has never said any such nonsense. How am I a walking graveyard?

When I was first starting to battle PCOS last year..
I went to a Dietitian.

The dietitian told me that we needed meat. As a person with abnormal hormone levels... I needed excessive amounts of meat protein versus veggie protein/shakes with whey.

But she also told me to do it healthfully.. it was going to be pricey. I'd need to get my meats completely organic and steroid free..

When you eat beef that has been taking steroids.. those steroids transfer into your body....

She said, "They give the cow those steroids to become a big, fat, cow..."
... then paused, "Do you want to become a big, fat, cow..."

Same reasoning with organic milk and eggs...

Most vegetarians don't care about animals or the (possible) health effects of meat. They just have a meat intolerance. Rather than tell people that meat gives them the runs, they adopt the stereotypical vegetarian attitude.

good for you. it would be quite a challenge and expensive for you to be a vegetarian with that calorie count. but you are not the average person with the average diet, so you fall outside the scope of this average topic thread.

Damn you all for encouraging me! Thanks though!

WarChild - here's one of the "healthiest" meat eaters of all time Runner Jim Fixx who proclaimed as long as he could run a marathon in under a certain time he could eat all the steak he wanted... Died of a heart attack while running... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Fixx I'm not promoting the Vegan Diet, Vegans are usually completely devoid of any nutritional information. I'm promoting that we should eat like we did 100 years ago. Eggs on Easter, Turkey on ThanksGiving and Ham on Christmas, not for breakfast lunch and dinner every day. Developing countries that stick to traditional diets of complex carbs & starches have almost none of the diseases of affluent countries. We're eating like Kings and Queens and are all fat and dieing like them, but you don't have to be fat to diet of a bad diet.

The reason you're a walking grave yard of animal flesh is because not only "you are what you eat" but the cholesterol and fats from the animal flesh & dairy build up in your body, not just your arteries but your joints/tendons/eyes/ears/penis, etc. The good news is that your body quickly heals when you return to a normal "Potato / Rice / Bean / Whole Grain low fat diet.

Here's the big problem with the protein rich diet.
#1. Breast Milk is only around 5% protein and that's the period of time when we grow the most. You'll be hard pressed to find any plant that contains less than 5% protein. Wheat is 45% and a Potato contains every essential nutrient we need to survive. You can google and read about Potato and or Rice diets where people have lived extended periods of time under lab conditions on either.
#2. Protein is made up of Amino Acids. The key word being "Acid" when you eat a diet high in Acid and low in Alkalizing green Veggies you end up with bone loss / kidney stones / Dental problems. Your body uses your Calcium supply like TUMS, when you eat a high protein meal your body buffers the acid and thus creates the osteoporosis that is so prevalent in developed countries, but almost non existent in places like Japan and China. You can literally measure the calcium loss after a high protein meal in your urine in that the amount of calcium contained in the meal is less than that going out.

The trouble with nutritional information is that there is so much conflicting information out there and much of it is provided by people trying to sell us things like vitamins/supplements/diet products/doctor visits/bypass surgery/dairy counsel/, etc
People seem to think we're DEFICIENT in nutrients. The reality is the disease in the USA, for example, is from TOO MUCH nutrients. People haven't had berry berry / scurvy / real diseases of deficiency in at least 200 years.

Sure some people can eat like crap and smoke and live to 105, but if you're among the majority of people like myself who had to learn this all the long and hard way I'd definitely steer you to Dr. McDougall or T. Colin Campbell at your local library and for the maximum cost of a .25c late fee you can read about how to save yourself/loved ones/prevention through eating an abundance of tasty healthy plant foods like bean burritos / pasta / baked potatoes / soups / rice dishes.

The reality, with the exception of Mad Cow disease, is that a bad diet takes decades to kill/injure most people so its kind of hard to get people to heed advice about a bus that may or may not hit them 20-40 years from now if they keep eating crap. Also, if you accept that a plant based diet will keep you healthy until your 95 you may not want to live that long anyways. I'm always looking for more current and pressing motivation like -looking younger -better athletic performance -better sexual performance -extended sex life -clearing up acne -less problems with allergies -not loosing your hair -cheaper food (think bag of rice / sack of potatoes / pasta NOT Whole Foods wallet raping organic mark up) -enjoying grandchildren (because you don't die at 50 of heart attack) -weight loss -trim body -no visits to doctor -no costly prescription medicine...

Hi peta.

Nobody is upset or said it's the worst thing on the planet. In fact, this thread was obviously started with a bias that not eating meat makes you necessarily healthier. I don't see how responding to this sillyness represents hate for your diet.

If you notice one thing about me and my vegetarianism, yes I do talk about it, but i dont try and push it on people, nor do I preach my compassion for animals. I was a hunter before going veg, I grew up eating, skinning, killing any animal that I could aim my gun at... to me the change I made is huge and i did it for my health and my own personal choices. It seems that because Cherry and I are vegetarians now, that anytime we post in these threads we get the "oh god here is cherry and fletch, we get it we know youre vegetarian" there are plenty of other vegetarians here. We share our thoughts, and recipes.

You guys start going off on how unhealthy vegetarians are and all kinds of shit, soy causes brain damage etc... lol someone brings up Bovine and its like the topic is new LOL, i have too many books about this to sit back and think some thread is going to have any valuable info in it, the brain damage angle simple hilarious when compared to mad cow disease lol

the stereotype you guys have of some puny vegetarian that is unhealthy and weak is simply untrue. Its all about stereotypes, and I assure you, I eat a way more balanced and nutricious meal than most vegans. But ive eaten this way forever, meat has never agreed with my stomach, it hurt me as a kid, so i cut it out of my diet as an adult, and it seems staying away from eating cows or drinking cow mucos, sets me apart from the crowd in a way that threatens them. I compare the veg vs meat debate to mac vs pc, the debate will never end with a winner, in the end of theday you eat what you eat and i eat what i eat.

This is the main reason i dont preach vegetarianism, i simply talk about what wrks for me, or what I have done personally.... notice im never in these threads calling meat eaters names, however, its not the same way towards me.

I told cherry long ago that i would not preach vegetarian living, but only mention that i practice it, and it seems even that is enough to get me unwanted attention, i assure you, you will never see me in these threads saying negative things about others its not worth my time and nor is explaining my diet to strangers on a forum.

I only mention that I am veg, i dont preach it to people.

he is making it up. Meat constipates most, not cause diarrhea. The average human has 5+ pounds of compacted, rotting meat in their colon.

People who have no substance just start making things up to makeup for the lack of ideas or thoughts to contribute.

no, actually, i am constantly amazed at how fast and effective my "system" has become. I eat a lot of very natural things that help the process. Meat eaters are usually constipated and definitely have pounds of rotting flesh in them. Fruit digests in your intestines, i eat alot of fruit it must go past your stomach quickly and get in your intestine... this provides moisture for your intestine and energy, so these things reach their destination promptly and begin digesting. Constipation, often caused by meats, is when you lack moisture in intestine, veggies are totally opposite.

anyone who eats a lot of nuts, and green fiber can attest to how fast the stuff moves through you. i am always amazed when i hear of meat eaters complaining they dont poop everyday, many meat eaters shit 2-3 times a week... my system is much more flushed (no pun intended) than that.

Look up any colon cleaning site and you can find tons of details on impacted feces and how it rots in you. Vegetarians do not have that.

to my online homie Warchild, whether you know it or not, or even believe it, guys like you inspire me. It is the desire to be healthy and live longer that makes me want to eat better. And when I see guys like you train daily and talk about it, it has rubbed off on me and I am doing way more outdoor stuf and seeking exercise these days than I did 6+ years ago when i was doing drugs and drinking myself to vomiting everynight.

the willpower and determination to cut out meat from my diet gives me the strength and will to push even further in my life, and while we may not be on the same page, i assure you, we are very much alike when it comes to the philosophy behind our diets.

I just approach it from different angle.

Anyhow, its Saturday and I have made it a point to not sit on gfy all weekend as i did in the past years, now I go out and get some exercise, tend to the garden, do some yardwork and enjoy the sun on my back.

heres to living and not dying brother.

im out, wont be back till Monday morning.

Never had problems with constipation myself. I normally just have one small serving of meat per day. I assume thats what most people eat but who knows I guess.

That's propaganda spread by people selling colon cleansing products.

It has been debunked by the scientific community over and over and over again.

Vegetables and fiber do help with regularity...but the idea that people who eat meat have lots of it stuck in their system is hogwash.

I am not going to go back and hunt down previous threads, but from an outsider's POV, yeah, you do come across as "preachy" at times.

LOL. Dude, when you say stuff like this you sound as ridiculous as the guys that say "vegetarians aren't healthy." It's true, a lot of vegetarians aren't healthy because they don't take the time to learn how proper nutrition works and how to replace the proteins they are losing my eating meat... but to say that "vegetarians aren't healthy" as a generalization is silly. Just like saying meat eaters don't take a dump daily.

Everybody in my personal life is a meat eater... and everyone of them takes a crap every day. If you are referring to meat eaters that "primarily" eat meat and other junk, then yes, they probably don't crap daily... but they should not be referred to as meat eaters, they should be referred to as "malnutritioned", because that's what they are. I have eaten meat probably every day for the past 12 years... the only time I ever have a problem taking a crap is when I don't eat enough fiber. It has absolutely nothing to do with meat... it's lack of fiber, something that vegetarians should never really have an issue with. Sometimes the rest of us just forget to "stock up". ;-)

And yes, you do come off as preachy... because you are preachy. You always have been. You were the same way with marijuana, alcohol, marriage, etc.... LOL. It's just who you are, don't deny it. ;-) I am argumentative... I would be in denial if I did not recognize that. It's just who I am.
