The vehicles owned by the Obama administration's auto team could reflect one reason why Detroit's Big Three automakers are in trouble: The list includes few new American cars.

Among the eight members named Friday to the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry and the 10 senior policy aides who will assist them in their work, two own American models. Add the Treasury Department's special adviser to the task force and the total jumps to three.

If you're wealthy as some of these guys are, you don't have many domestic options. Foreign cars are just better.

The funniest part about the whole auto mess is the scapegoating that is going on. Some want to blame it on unions, some on bonuses, some on the economy. The reason these guys are hurting is because they make shit cars. Their vehicles get the same MPG they did 25 years ago. They chose to waste their innovation on heated car seats instead of fuel efficiency. On video cameras in the back instead of quality craftsmanship.

If GM built a solid car that got 75 MPG, they wouldn't know what to do with all the money they made.

I'm a very loyal American car buyer and I keep my vehicles in the GM line... With that being said. I agree with exactly what you're saying.

4 out of the top ten sold cars in us for 2008 were american.so someone was buying them.

toyota is taking a 1.78 billion dollar loss
nissan is laying off 20,000 workers.
saab is filing for bankruptcy.
the problem is no one can get car loans.
on my second mercury and they have been great cars.

The problem is people have to take out loans to buy a car

Just like the problem with health care is people need insurance to "afford" it.

didnt obama say he wanted "more green cars"? serious, the US gas guzzlers are a fuckwit regarding saving fuel ... besides, jap and german cars are way better crafted ... so, is it a miracle they dont wanna be seen in an US environment-bomber? hmm? time for change ;)

I agree. Seems to me like all of them are hurting.

I've driven nothing but Fords since 1995. Seven Mustangs, an Escape, an Explorer, and a few others. Not that I like Fords or anything; I like Mustangs and I like to buy from one dealer. Trust me, when you buy two new cars every year the dealership remembers you.

All of this time and I've had one problem; The alternator cable went out on my current Mustang ( which I purchased used anyhow ). It was covered, and I got my 20k tune up done for free.

Everyone talks crap about American cars. On the JD Powers auto website on their main page they have a list of the top five vans based on dependablity. Four out of five are American. The comments about the poor quality are based on perception, not fact.

The fact is I have owned a total of 7 cars in my life. (It's distressing to think I have needed 7 cars in only 14 years of driving).

Here is how they played out:
AMERICAN- 1 good, 4 bad
IMPORT- 2 good, 0 bad

AMERICAN
1. 1990 Dodge Shadow, purchased for $2,000 in 1995 with 80k miles on it, transmission died in 1996, no fault of my own.
BAD

AMERICAN
2. 1992 Saturn SL2, purchased for $8,000 in 1996 with 62k miles on it, engine died in 1998, totally my fault.
GOOD

AMERICAN
3. 1995 Mercury Sable, purchased for $4,000 in 2000 with 35k miles on it, engine died in 2001 (luckily 1 month after I traded it in), no fault of my own.
BAD

AMERICAN
4. 2000 Kia Sportage, purchased for $6,000 in 2001 with 46k miles on it, in and out of the shop for various reasons, finally got rid of it in 2002.
BADBADBAD

AMERICAN
5. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, purchased for $16,000 in 2002 with 35k miles on it, in and out of the shop for various reasons (and service was a bitch to deal with), finally got rid of it in 2004.
BADBADBADBAD

IMPORT
6. 2001 Honda Accord, purchased for $9,000 in 2004 with 65k miles on it, no problems whatsoever, traded for a new car in 2008 after my best friend ran into a parked boat and it wasn't worth paying to fix.
GREAT

IMPORT
7. 2008 Mazda3, purchased for $15,000 in 2008 with 14 miles on it, no problems thus far (and the interest rate is only 2.9%)
EARLY TO TELL, BUT GREAT FINANCING OPTIONS, GREAT PRICE, AND GREAT CAR THUS FAR

TOTAL SPENT IMPORTS: $24,000
TOTAL SPENT DOMESTIC: $36,000

the last 6 cars I have owned were all north American

Dodge Caravan moved my kids around town no problem
Chevy Cavalier (ran it into the ground) it did me very well!
Chevy Camaro great car had it a few years and then sold it
Chrysler Sebring this car was good too drove it until I moved to Canada and then sold it
Ford Focus Ellisa owned this when I met her we had it through its whole lease
Ford Escape Great car leased it kept it until the end of its lease

all of these cars were North American and never one time did I have to take them to the shop other then an oil change and new tires or brake pads when needed

and now I am driving a Lincoln MKX and its fantastic, we tried out 20 different cars when we looked for this one and it was the most comfortable and feature rich of all that we tried out for the money.

Overall I enjoy buying North American, I owned one foreign vehicle and that was a Suzuki GSXR 600 motorcycle and that was a great bike too! but its my only foreign vehicle purchase

Would I buy Foreign? Sure if the vehicle is right for me Ill get it I don't buy based on where it was built. I sat in and test drove everything before our last purchase and we kept going back to the Lincoln and I am happy we did.

I thought American cars were less American then Toyotas or Hondas now days.

If I made less then 80k a year I would maybe be able to consider an american car, but none of them are as nice as a 5 series bmw.
