SEO Guys

A friend of mine read an article the other day which said the ppl who clicked the sponsored ads generally make under 40k a year and are uneducated. Have you seen this type of statistics before?

It depends on the niche/market, there isn't a specific income group that clicks on the ads.

It's probably part of the whole organic vs. paid debate. Some say they are uneducated, but I've known many extremely educated people (just not in the ways of the web) that still don't know the difference between paid and unpaid.

There's also the intent of the searcher - informational use - probably going to go for the natural links. commercial use - might click every paid link and find out who has the best deal.

Not sure if that's where you are going, but it's not necessarily bad that they are uneducated and make less than 40k...

I doubt there's a salary based to the people that click on ads, also depends on the market/niche.

All people click ads. Those who click them more/automatically are the ones who cant tell the difference between organic and paid results.
So usually those new to internet/search engines click them more.
Uneducated people usually also dont have that much search engine experience, so there is truth in it, but thats not the main reason.
Those who use search engines more start to filter the ads away and look for organic results.

Sure it is, if you are selling something that has a high dollar value you don't want them to click.

That's more like demographics, and has nothing to do with SEO... and check out quantcast for some generalized stats...

What ads did you mean, in what context? You mean banners or text? Porn or not?

:D

what does this have to do with SEO?

are you referring to the sponsor ads on Google or Yahoo or banners on sites? I know for a fact that what your friend says is 100% not true. ive ran campaigns for large ticket items and services that an "uneducated person under $40k" would not be able to afford.

i hear this debate almost every day, and its mostly a large number of SEO and offline ad companies that create a lot of lies to customers. cant really blame them because search campaigns are (imo) more effective in most cases than tv, radio and paper.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SEO. Where did I say it does? It's in the title bc. most SEO guys will know SOMETHING about this topic. I never once said this has anything to do with SEO. You guys amaze me sometimes.

To answer your question, PPC on yahoo and google.

sheesh, it was just a quesiton because i saw it in the title

i think in the past 3-5 years SEM/PPC and SEO has changed a lot, to which there are a number of SEO guys who don't know jack past the basics of how to set up a campaign; same for SEM guys who claim to know SEO.

i used to offer both SEM and SEO services to clients about 5 or so years ago but stopped pursuing SEO as a paid client service because of the extent of what needs to be done, mostly on the client side. you would be surprised just how detailed SEM/PPC really is with some larger high end campaigns.

np

Ive read that about 60% of Google.com users clicks on the sponsored listings, which is probably closer to 70% now with the change of ad formats on the results page over the past few years.

anyway you can get that article that your friend read? im willing to bet it came from an offline ad company

I have found that educated internet users tend to utilize the organic search engine listings more than the pay per click results (both Adwords and Yahoo's Overture - now Yahoo Search Marketing). They do so because they understand that the sponsored results are all businesses that have chosen to be listed among the SERPS.

honestly, who ever wrote this is an idiot and I will personally say that to their face

i sent this over to my rep at AdWords to see what she has to respond. but my is she will respond with pretty much what I say... the Internet is a place that anyone can be an expert if they have a website. to publish something in a medical journal you have to have solid proof of your claims, and my guess, this guy/girl ran an AdWords campaign which failed and blames it on "uneducated people"

if this was the case, then not just mine, but ALL these campaigns would be failing, and why are they paying upwards of $15 per click for people who dont make over $40k a year? http://www.google.com/search?source=...le+Search&aq=f

I guess I have to agree somewhat... you must be pretty "uneducated" if you cant see the difference considering one says "SPONSORED LISTINGS" right above it

I would also think a web novice wouldn't click on sponsored listings, as they know the organic results will probably have the information he is looking for.
