It's because you're a slave driver dick. People aren't robots. Sure the understand they need to perform duties but they also want to enjoy life, their jobs. You are missing something here and this thread reflects it and is giving you some clues you are totally missing. Perhaps you should consider therapy..

Exactly. The quickest thing we do as people is project things onto someone else. Not my problem, not my fault. So typical and easily corrected, yet is it? Not if people aren't willing to acknowledge their part in the problem.. Look at the world today, it's why we have wars and the BS we do, nobody is willing to take responsibility. "Oh no, it's *his* fault. I am perfect"

My advice in this is if you need someone, and they prove to be worthy for a salary, treat them right. Treat them and reward them when you can. In the end, a few bucks extra goes a lot further with someone who knows the work and does the job. I'm not saying reward someone who is lazy and doesn't perform, I'm saying, and in most cases, employers tend to try and save a few dollars by letting the more expensive guys go in trade for some "new guy" who will do it for a few hundred dollars less. They end up spending more resources hiring and training the new guy then actually keeping the old guy and meeting his demands at least partly.

The sad reality of how this industry and others treat treat their available resources..

Within reason yes. The soldier always grumbles. But it's a fine line between a grumbling soldier and a deserter. Or is it??

I do not know about the whole 'fine line' argument. Some people are just quitters. Others are worker bees who will always bitch, but never leave. I know plenty of them on both sides.

Unfortunately for the quitters, they let their 'pride' get the best of them, and not make rationale decisions. Quitting or biting the hand that feeds them instead of sucking it up, biding your time, and making a better decision down the line. I know a TON of people in this category.

They burn every bridge on their way out of town. Not only do they lose in the short term, making no money. They lose in the long term when they need references for their next gig.

PRIDE has fucked up more deals in business then I can count. From models, to other companies, and many in between. PRIDE does not pay the bills.

In all my years in business every time I talk to someone who works for somebody all I hear is bitching and moaning about how they are not happy with their job and their boss is a asshole and stingy and has no clue how to run things.

Bottom line is your always gonna be an asshole to those who work for you even if you treat them well and pay well, after all no one wants to work for somebody and everyone feels they are not appreciated, so you might as well stop trying to be mister nice guy and put your business first.

This is my tip of the year :-)

I dont agree.
A good boss is someone who focus on being a good BOSS and not a good FRIEND.
If the people working for you think you are a asshole, its because you are a poor boss (and maybe a asshole to)

I have had great bosses and shitty bosses.

Well I am mostly a freelancer but I consider my clients to be my bosses since they pay the bills.

My two main clients are total opposites of each other. One boss is a asshole without a clue and the other is fantastic.

So not all bosses are dicks.

I've had my fair share of both kinds of bosses, but I have to say I am lucky now. If I have a genuine issue, I'm not afraid to take it to the top and know it's dealt with, and in return, I do the best possible job I can. I do the same for my staff, and they appreciate the open lines of communication. Often I find the bosses who are labeled assholes are the ones who feel they still have to micromanage everything even after they have hired the best possible employees. In their minds, they are making sure the job gets done, but don't hire good people if you aren't going to give them the chance to do the work.

I think you're probably right. It goes with the territory. Most people hate their jobs period (polls have shown this consistently), so most are going to dislike the boss and everything he/she represents. Most people don't enjoy getting up 5 or more days a week to work and be told what to do. From my own experience, I've never enjoyed my job(s) - I'd rather play all day - but I've been relatively indifferent to bosses. I've never had a bad boss. I've never been treated harshly, unfairly, etc. I've never had a female boss either so I've never been able to test if I have a gender bias.

An employee also lacks information to decide when the boss is being a slave driver or not because they don't have access to the bottom line. When the boss asks you for the extra hour or to get something done, it could be crucial to the business or it could be the boss is just a hardass. The employee does not know so will usually judge the boss as a hardass not realizing how important it is.

In larger companies, I think a lot of employees never make the connection that the more successful the company is, the better the chances of them having a job to go to every day. I recall my dad who worked at a company for years. When employees found out that the plant was likely to close due to outsourcing, production from that plant skyrocketed overnight. In other words, even with good pay and good treatment, workers did the bare minimum and only actually worked when they thought it could potentially save the plant from closure.

for the most part probably true as i think it is human nature, and you hear it from other employees.

i've been lucky in the past and been able to learn lots from some stellar employers.

I had limited experience before ditching the employer-employee model and working for myself. It's 50/50: one asshole boss (a restaurant), one great boss (commercial wing of a university). The former encouraged me to clean the fucking place up, the latter encouraged me to think, innovate and extend myself.

It's certainly not always the case, but probably more often than not. My mom was good friends with her boss, her and others in the office did activities their boss outside of work regularily. He was a decent person.

There's a difference between an employer and a supervisor...My last job that I had in 2002 was at the Post Office...So I didn't even really have a direct supervisor...As long as I did what I was supposed to do and showed up on time, I had no problems...Therefore, I was a good employee...

Now if I was working for a small family business or for one person, things might be different...I would have not only my boss, but the owner up in my face all day and I would be constantly reminded that the only reason that I'm there is to make the owner money...I don't think I could work DIRECTLY under someone unless it was on a contract basis because I have an arrogant attitude and that doesn't work in small work environments...I need a large group of people where I can just blend in and do my work.

It's just different when you're seeing the actual owner making money and living it up while you slave than when you're in a govt agency or a big corporation working under a supervisor who doesn't have anymore interest in the businesses well being than you do...
