Is the 80's music to the kids today as the 60's music was to the kids in the 80's????

Is it different?

Is it exactly the same?

I can't get a proper perspective on music.

Why would you assume that?
Tell me what music and the types of music that came out of the 60's to early 70's and then tell me what type and music came out of the 80's.

To older folks they won't understand, but yes.... it's alot like the 80's/60's. I was in highschool during the 80's and listened to both 60's and 80's music. It was a re-invasion of the British. Early 80's - Duran Duran, Culture Club, Depeche Mode, Adam and the Ants, The Smiths, New Order.

I went through a huge 60's period during that time. Zepplin, Beatles, Doors, The Animals.

Then in the mid to late 80's I got into the "better" stuff - Foetus, Wolfgang Press, Bauhaus, Joy Division (actually late 70's), Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Ultra Vivid Scene, early (non-gay) The Cure. For the 60's and 70's I got into The Stooges, Bowie, Pink Floyd.

Shooting models who were born near or after the 80's ended - they are listening to 80's music/and todays music just like I was listening to 80's and 60's music.

I doubt it. I see kids with pink floyd, beatles, led zeppelin, sabbth shirts all the time. Its not too often you see kids wearing duran duran or culture club shirts around, unless they are trying to be "camp".

Because of how the question was phrased.

I agree. MTV use to play anything. You could hear/see some great crazy stuff!

Now that they are HUGE (and corporate), they stick to safe, bland, non-inventive shit. Just like radio has been for a long time.

I think good music transends age, and bad music is your "parents music". bad 80' music is like bad 60's music. But the top 60's 70s 80s or 90s music still sounds good years later.

The 80's music was alot gayer than the 60's music, so there must be a big difference.

I was born in 1978 and I grew up on 80's AND 90's music. I was in elementary school during the 80's and in high school during 1992-1996

I started listening to 80's music and watching mtv since I was like 5. I started really young. I remember watching Debbie Gibson, Madonna, Michael Jackson when I was like 6-8 years old already. I still like 80's music. 90's too. And current pop too.

No, no, no . . . . I don't know who owned it, or when they owned it, but when MTV started, they played anything and everything. Most of the music on MTV was NEVER broadcast on the radio. NEVER!!

It was waaaaayyyyy offfff the beaten path. Sure they grew quickly, but for years they played hidden bands and never heard before songs that would never have seen the light of day otherwise.

Over time there was a slow cross over where the "mainstream" radio came toward MTV and MTV went toward "mainstream" radio. Today there is NO difference.

the 60s and early 70s were always my favorites, although i did grow up in the 80s...

i think 80s music (mostly speaking of GNR, Poison, Crue, etc.) is getting popular with kids these days due to their appearances on Guitar Hero.

My 8 and 10 year old nephews are in love with Poison... never thought that would be the case

I watched Basic Instinct last night and the club scene had a techno thing playing that would be normal in any club today. It was wild as I tend to think of that type of music as "new". It is just new to me.

I had a discussion last night with some friends about my musical tastes, a lot of which can be traced back directly to what my mother listened to - Namely Queen, the Beatles, David Bowie......

... and what's old becomes new again! =)

People have a thing for going back to the past. but it cant be too close by... so thats why i agree with the statement... people used to listen to 60's music during the 80s because it was "so old it became cool"... 70s was too close to be cool - it was just old.

Same thing with today. 90s is just too fresh in our memories... so the 80s stuff brings good memories to older people and new sensations to young ones... as a matter of fact, a lot of cutting edge electronic music being produced today is inspired on the punk/clash sensation... spicing up electro and electrorock productions. JunkieXL is a good example - he has a lot of 80s vibes on his new album: Booming Right At You

The same happens with art and anything else really! Everything that is old is new again!

My 2 cents! =)

Cheers,

Bruno

Although I really enjoyed all of the posts in this thread (and they really made me think), this was the exact type of answer I had been searching for. Seems right on to me.

I think your 2 cents are worth a hell of a lot more than 2 cents! Thanks!

80's "pop" is a nightmare.... 60's pop was filled with stones and beatles... shit I'm 25 and would MUCH rather listen to music from the 60's over ANY decade. The 60's were simply an awesome time for music...

Oh! Another nice post!

I do very much agree with that concept, however, my question was geared toward perception by the youth (as opposed to an appreciation of the quality of music from any particular time).

I think you nailed your idea though! Thank you.

A while back I spotted my 15-yr-old daughter wearin' an AC/DC t-shirt. Out of curiosity I asked her if she could name three of their songs.

She came up with a couple from 'Back in Black'......and a newer one.

So I took hope.

Then, the other day we were drivin' together in the car and I had some old Boston on ('Peace of Mind'). She knew it was Boston, but had to ask me the song title.

We've always played a lot of 80s classic rock in the house over the years, so I guess its finally getting absorbed by the kids. Its too bad they don't have the memories and mental images from that era to go along with it.

Or maybe that's a good thing.

Alot of 80's some people don't even know came from that era. I heard YAZ's "Only You" on a Hallmark commercial for Mother's day this year. They have had The Smiths on Nissan Commercials, and the list goes on.

IMHO, 80's music is way more complex than anything the 60's had.

I was in high school during the late 90s, my main musical interests Punk Rock from the late 70s/early 80s (due to my brother and the local college radio station) in addition to hip hop and trance/house. If the question is do kids today view, 80's music as "old school," "classic," or "their parents music," then I think the answer would be "yes."

Since we are on the topic of the "youth of today," what the fuck is up with Emo? It's so bad, everything about it sucks, it's all absolutely awful. I just don't understand how anyone could like that garbage.
