Should we Pay to Rebuild New Orleans Again?
While I hope that Gustav, goes to Texas, as far away from Florida as possible. If it did hit New Orleans again. Should we, the American Tax Payer, pay again to have this city which is under see level, to be rebuilt again? I say No!

				 | Fuck no. It shouldn't have been rebuilt last time. New Orleans is a costal city that is below sea level. Yeah...I see no problems with that. Nothing bad could possibly happen there.

Should the taxpayer ever have to pay to rebuild Miami, which is surrounded on 3 sides by water and filled with illegal Cuban immigrants?

				 | We should stop giving federal aid to California too....with all the mudslides, wildfires, and earthquakes. We should just abandon the place and move all of those people to the desert directly east because it's safer. New Orleans isn't important either. Things like ports and oil refineries and oil rigs aren't important to our national economy. We should just shut the whole place down and let gas go up to $5/gallon.

It'll just get hit by terrorist again right? And BTW, all the insurance that people pay for was in place so your tax money actually went to bail out rich insurance companies so that they could resale their worthless policies again.

				 | At least Miami is above sea level. There just needs to be new legislation that would allow state and local government to build emergency levies using Cubans. Problem solved.

				 | New Orleans is pretty much the gateway to the Midwest... anybody ever hear of the Mississippi River? Will I feel sympathetic if people stay behind again and get killed? Probably not. Should we rebuild? Absolutely. But this time, let's do it right...

Yes, a tornado will clear a path through the middle of a large city or completely destroy a small one (Greensburg, KS). It's not like people have to constantly fight off tornadoes. They happen. There's nothing we can do about it. Turn off the pumps and remove the levies and see what happens to New Orleans. This isn't rocket science.

There's no excuse this time for anyone to stay behind. Last time things were a clusterfuck and poor people did fall through the cracks. Not this time though. As for rebuilding...I can't understand why they refuse to just build a levy system like the one they have in the Netherlands and just be done with it. They've wasted so many billions over the decades building a system designed for a category 3 storm....it's ridiculous.

Unless the construction laws dictate that houses have to be built out of 100% waterproof material, it's not going to help. I grew up in Florida, I remember hurricane David for crying out loud, so don't tell me how great things are there and shit....if I dig through the archives of the Miami Herald and the Orlando Sentinel I'm sure I can find billions and billions of dollars of wasted taxpayer money. You can find it anywhere. I now live 60 miles north of New Orleans, and you're in here asking whether or not we should abandon an entire U.S. city because you don't like the way the federal dollars were spent on rebuilding. (FWIW, most of that money that you "think" was spent here hasn't been spent....the "rebuilding" has been painfully slow and most of the federal dollars are still just sitting there, so even if the whole city gets obliterated this time around, very little of your tax money went towards anything that will get obliterated) The next time there's a hurricane in your area, and FEMA is bringing in bottled water and ice and medical supplies to your neighborhood, should I complain about the money being spent there because you're the one who decided to live so close to the ocean so you should have to fend for yourself? Gimme a fucking break man.

				 | Why do people want to live along an 800 mile geologic transform fault, or in tornado country, or in places where there are blizzards and they can be snowed in and have to be evacuated, or anywhere on the eastern seaboard where there can be a hurricane or tropical storm? Why do people as stupid as you want to live at all?

				 | Snake Doctor, You left out the fact that most of the contractors that were working under the feds got screwed out of their money. They'll be damn lucky if they can even find another crew to attempt to help them this time. When the federal government owes you $100,000,000 and the President is George W Bush, well good luck. lol |

				 | While I am sympathetic to those who lived there and lost everything or their loved ones, I have to ask, WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU EXPECT LIVING BELOW SEA LEVEL with nothing protecting you but an old man made wall??? RULE #1: Nature always wins. I say... if anyone was dumb enough to go back to live in that same area, this time I don't feel sorry for them. RULE #2: Measure twice, cut once. If the government and state is going to spend the money, they had better build that place up so it's above sea level. This is the second time (maybe), so if they need to rebuild they need to flatten the entire city, build it up and start new. Otherwise, history WILL repeat itself. It's not like that was a fluke hurricane that hit them. We have hurricane season every year. It's gonna happen again. And sure, let tax dollars pay for them to raise the city. NOT to rebuild the city again below sea level. Though tax dollars don't really pay for that anyway, as they only pay the interest on the debt that the country owes, so in theory that means that the USA just has to borrow more money from China. I see no problem with that. We're already paying on the interest anyway, why stop now? God speed to any of you in New Orleans. |

Land to live on is in short supply. There will always be people in that area wether it's rebuilt or not. It can be full of squaters, escaped criminals, illegal immigrants all living in shanty huts as the place becomes completely lawless or it can be rebuilt and managed. It's like this for some people : A. live in that crappy house over there and there MIGHT be a disaster or B. Keep living in the street without a house and take your chances being murdered in your sleep. There are way more murders than floods so I would take my chances with the flood.
