Any remedies to remove tar/asphalt? - GoFuckYourself.com

Does anyone know what I will have to use to remove tar/asphalt from my tires?

We just had our streets in the neighborhood re surfaced and the company paving said it was Ok to drive on shortly after they paved it. We waited a day before driving on it, but I still have this shit stuck on my tires. I am not too pleased at the moment because these rims and tires were not cheap.

If anyone has had to go through this, I would appreciate any help you could give

Ohh I just bought something at autozone that did let me find it ..

Turtle was maxes a tar and bug remover that works well. Also at a auto paint store you can get a product called "prep sol" think dupont, sherwin williams, and PPG all have a version of prep sol. Put it on a clean soft rag and rub it around. Get as much as you can off with that. Once its off you should take a new soft cloth and a scratch and haze remover polish and go back over the area like you would if you were waxing it. Mequires #7 works well for this, but lots of other products available too. I ran a bodyshop and a detail shop, plus did autoparts for years hehe.

kerosene or diesel would be better

auto parts stores will have bug and tar remover for cars,

if you wanted to be more "green" a bunch of that orange citrus based cleaner would probably do it with a tad of elbow grease and a brush.

For starters, what are your rims made out of? Using anything chemical or powerful thinner could damage the coating on your rims.

Personally I try to use a high pressure hose to get the bulk of it off, then a 'bug and tar remover'. Also you could try getting some polish - not sure of brands over there but we have abrand called 'mothers' that makes a very fine cut and polish for dirty rims. It works wonders and doesn't damage wheels. You should probably visit your local auto store and ask them.

Thanks for the tips.
I was able to remove it off of my wheels using goof off, now I have to get something today to get it off the tires. The tires look like I dipped them in batter.
I am hoping this will not be an all day project at the car wash.
Here is a product I found that is environmentally safe and it sounds as if it might do the job.

Goof off is great. I have used it for years, but never tried it on tar. It seemed to do well for the wheels and some of the trim.
