It's trailer cuttin' time.

So Baddog brought me out of hiding and now in not so many ways has brought me out of retirement.

I'm looking to take on a few editing projects again for a select few clients. For people that don't know my style. I'll post a few samples here and more at RedShoe.net

I am skilled in the art of trailer making.

The following are general editing samples.
Just Fuckin' 2 This was edited for a Justin Slayer DVD. It was used as the intro to the movie before the movie plays and to advertise Just Fuckin' 2 on other DVD's.

Priscilla I edited this for my own site, AssholeMassacre.com I recreated the music in Acid and is based on the music from the Matrix trailers, and then is mixed with purchased music.

CollegeFuckFest I learned to edit while working at TripleXCash and this was among my first edits.

Nicole Brazzle I edited this for NaughtyPigtails.com and there was just something about this girl I really liked. Must have been her pigtails...

I ask that you all to go to RedShoe.net and view my best examples.

...and oh yeah.. this message is gonna be coming to you fast and hard.

What software do you use if I may ask
and don't worry......unless it creates trailers by itself I'm not going to be able to
work with it.......just being curious

Good question. I used to be embarrassed to say I used Vegas Video. VV was like a low level consumer product that anyone could get. I guess it still is, but I was taught that it's the end result that matters.

I used to think it was the tool that made a good product. But in the end, I realize it's the craftsman that operates that tool that makes the product.

I'm still going to teach myself AVID and then take the $1000 weekend course. Above all else, I want to teach myself motion graphics as well. I do all my animations in vegas and that suuuucks ass to do. I'm sure AE does it better, but it's soooo fucking complex.

Avid thats cool but the software is sooooo expensive and I heard they are losing market share big time to final cut.

A friend of mine works at post house in LA. Remember that crazy christian lady on the wife-swap shows last year? He told me about that footage before it aired.

All those guys edit on Avid systems. And they do like 90% of all reality shows.

I've been watching all the online tutorials on Avid. I dunno man.. it looks cool, but it doesn't seem to edit with the speed that I'm used to. In vegas I can toss footage onto the timeline and edit in real time and as fast as I can think. As the footage is playing, I'm a few seconds out in front of the footage tweaking it. I cut and recut and recut and recut... over and over until I get close, then I go in for a few tweaks and watch it a few hundred more times to make sure it's perfect, tweaking it almost every time I rewatch it, until it's exactly how I want it.

The other programs, FC and Avid seem to make you get it right the first time. Like tweaking it seems to be more of a pain in the ass.

In vegas I'll bring in an entire scene, then I'll take (for example) a quick cut of a dick going into a pussy, then grab a piece later of the dick slapping the pussy. So I'll cut those two pieces out and drag them to an upper layer timeline and stick them side by each to test how they ... fuck it, let's just say I have my own methods.... (yes this was much longer but I edited it down)

In Avid or in FC it doesn't seem that easy, it's like you have to watch every frame of every clip from beginning to end and make end points, and then create subclips and drop those onto your TL in order of they way you want them and the most you can do is re arrange the subclips and then drop on some transitions (cross fades mostly). Where in Vegas you can drop them into the TL and slide them around and get what you want. You can spin the footage, flash the footage, glow and blur it at will.. but in FC and AVID you seem to have to rely on AE for that stuff.

Basically.. in Vegas I use the TL as the scrubber and trimmer, where in AVID and FC you don't. You actually use a trimmer independent of the TL. Kinda of an extra step as far as I can tell.

... Or am I just not understanding FC and AVID?

actually, you're right about AVID, but not for FC.

In FC you can edit like you do in Vegas, you just gotta tweak a few settings and learn a few key strokes. FC coupled with Soundtrack Pro, Motion and Shake = the shit.

Thats what I use now.

Welcome back to the editing game my friend

My problem is, that I can do almost anything I want with vegas (providing that the footage is high enough quality). The downside to Vegas is, people think you NEED to use FC to edit. Some potential clients ask outright, "can you use FC?" No, and neither can the potential client, so who cares? In the end I'll produce the highest end product I know how.

A mutual friend of mine cut the "Lord of the Rings Trailers". What did she cut on FC or AVID, and can you really tell the difference?

Again, I think it all comes down to the user, but I do know that Avid has some polishing tools that Vegas doesn't have.

After watching the Avid Tutorials, I can see now that Vegas is very substandard in it's features. Avid seems like PhotoShop and Vegas seems like PainShopPro.

Vegas has a lot of pre built filters and transitions. It's easy to cut and drop on flash frames, and crossfades are made simply by sliding the one clip over the other one. But in Avid you have to select the crossfade, and drop a crossfade filter onto the transition and set the time of the crossfade. It's like 3 extra steps. It just seems to slow.

Avid can do way more than Vegas, but you have to do it all manually. I guess another analogy would be like the difference between WYSIWYG vs. good old fashioned notepad. You can build everything and more in notepad, but WYSIWYG is just a bunch of prebuilt pieces of code that help you.

Not sure if that's making any sense. I just wish Vegas had more followers. Go look at any Craigslist post requesting editors. The jobs will require that you know Final Cut, but then they'll say they'll give you the footage to edit... so what fucking difference does it make how it gets cut???

Give me the footage and you'll get back a product that looks exactly how you envisioned. Does it matter if I used FC or Avid, or Vegas or some 40 dollar editing tool, as long as you get exactly what you ask for??

A mutual friend of mine cut the "Lord of the Rings Trailers". What did she cut on FC or AVID, and can you really tell the difference?

Again, I think it all comes down to the user, but I do know that Avid has some polishing tools that Vegas doesn't have.

After watching the Avid Tutorials, I can see now that Vegas is very substandard in it's features. Avid seems like PhotoShop and Vegas seems like PainShopPro.

I'll be the first one to agree that its not the tool that makes the editor, but his talent.

I first started using Premiere Pro and a bit of After Effects and I was blowing people away.

I was simply responding to your comment about workflow on FCP and Avid.

FCP's workflow is quite as easy as Vegas, but it also has the advantage of being used in conjuction with its studio, which is a HUGE asset. You can import your FCP project into Soundtrack Pro, edit all the audio, add sound effects, balance everything for 5.1 and then bringing the entire project back into FCP without having to render anything out. Your original timeline stays intact and everything is done in Metadata, which is a huge time-saver and increases your functionality dramatically.

I respect the fact you want to stay with Vegas, I'm simply saying that FCP is a great thing to learn if you're looking to ramp up your skills

So the only way to ramp up my skills is to go FCP?

Just messin with you.

I agree, not so much that FCP is the be all end all. I still want to learn Avid, and my connections to mainstream say it still dominates despite what Tony says.

I'm not refusing to learn it, but when I get an extra 20K, I'll think about dropping it into a FC system. Right now it just doesn't make sense financially for me to learn FC if mainstream is hiring Avid. Ideally I'd like to stay in adult but dabble in mainstream.

I see now, I've failed to explain WHY I want to learn Avid. I don't want to edit student films, and comedy reels. I want to get back into dabble in mainstream movie promos. Hate to burst y'alls bubbles but major studios and post houses don't edit on FCP.

The girl I know that did the Lord of the Rings trailers did them on Avid.

Walter Murch:

He is perhaps the only film editor in history to have received Academy nominations for films edited on four different systems:

* Julia (1977) using upright Moviola
* Apocalypse Now (1979), Ghost (1990), and The Godfather, Part III (1990) using KEM flatbed
* The English Patient (1996) using Avid, and
* Cold Mountain (2003) using Final Cut Pro.

Now if I could just win me one using Vegas....

I've actually worked on a Flatbed and a moviola, soon I'll be using Avid.. in time I may go to FCP I could be the master of all editing.

And I got nothing against student films, that was my ticket into FX oh so many years ago. I just don't want to have to go thru that all over again. Although... it could be a good way to start over.

hhmmmm....

I hear ya man. I know you'll always be VV4L. I would be too if it were more accepted in mainstream.

Who knows... with Sony owning Vegas Video... and Sony owning Bluray maybe Vegas will start to gain more credibility in the mainstream market.

I think one think it needs is more integration with After Effects. I've been trying to teach myself AE and it's SOOOOO different than Vegas, that's hard to cross over. I guess the transitions from Avid and FCP into AE is much more smooth, and I think once you get bigger into AVID parts of AE get integrated into the editing program.

not really, AE is a whole different ball game from any of the other editing systems, cause, well... its not an editing system

Right, it's a compositing system, I get that. But I'm just saying I wish it were easier to move between the two. Right now the standard way is to edit all your shit then render out the pieces you want to "enhance" and then drop them in AE to tweak and add effects to, then render those tweaks out as an avi and drop them back into the editing tool. Kind of a slow time consuming way of doing things, based on my own style.

I've read that once you get high enough up the Avid program, you can open AE in Avid and edit that way.
