Well, that was certainly an interesting evening.

Went to my son's graduation ceremony this evening. Was a nice event, and I am definitely proud of him and his accomplishments. There was a comment in a speech though that really perked up my ears, and I am sure you guys will find interesting.

The Sheriff was telling the story about two deputies that had been killed in an ambush 10 years ago. At the end of the story he started talking about the improvements in equipment and technology today (that may have saved their lives if it had happened today).

He mentioned that he had recently ridden around in a test vehicle that had the ability to automatically scan license plate numbers of vehicles in the front, behind and to the side of the patrol unit and check for wants and warrants on said vehicles, giving them the ability to make hits they were not even looking for!

I am going to try to have my license plate number blocked thru one of my kids (both of theirs are).

It reminded me of an instance about 15 years ago where I had to do some work for a company that developed equipment for the military. It was around the time RoboCop was out, and I remember thinking that RoboCop wasn't too far fetched of a concept. Looks like they are getting closer and closer every day.

Congrats, as far as your son goes.

As far as the technical shit goes: (im not trying to hijack your thread)
Great, Thats just what we need. More big brother bullshit.

About 3 years ago, I was up late one night cause I couldn't sleep. Around 2 In the morning, I herd a noise outside in my driveway. I looked out the window and saw some fucking crackhead breaking into my car while his crackhead friend stood at the end of my drive keeping watch. So I grabed up a baseball bat and snuck outside to scare them off.
When I came around the corner of my house I went for the one in my car. He pulled up with a fucking can of mace and shot that shit straight into my chest. It was like breathing fucking fire, and everything I could do to keep my eyes open. The crackhead at the bottom of my drive started running up the driveway towards myself and crackhead number 1. So thinking I may now be in mortal danger, or quite simply fucked, I started swinging that fucking bat at anything that made a sound, or anything that I could see through the mace haze.
I got in a few good shots with the bat when my neighbor came out of his house with his gun. I had totaly fucked up one of them, he was on the ground and going nowhere. The other tried to run, but my neighbor chased him down the street and eventualy caught him.
The police showed up a few minutes later, an ambulance came for the crackhead, and one came for me. After the medic gave me an eye wash and determined I was not in need of further medical attention, I got to deal with the cops.
Keep in mind please, I was in my house laying in bed not 10 minutes ago minding my own fucking business. I had been maced and attacked by 2 fucking crackheads. I WAS THE FUCKING VICTIM.
When the police searched the kid I fucked up in my driveway, he had my wallet in his pocket, cause my dumb ass left it in the car. This stupid fucking pig ran my shit.
Then arrested me.
For an out of state warrent for unpaid speeding and parking tickets.(warrent was in PA, I live in OH)
They charged me with assault, cause obviously after you get maced your supposed to let whoever did it fuck you up.
I was in jail for 8 days in Ohio till my lawyer got the judge to drop the charges. (c$2,000) Then I was immediatly taken into custody and sat in the same fucking jail for 2 more days untill I was extradited to PA on my warrent for Speeding and parking tickits. I sat in that fucking place for 12 days before I went to court and was released because I could pay those tickets (c$1,500 including court costs.)
And by the way, the 2 crackheads from my driveway were released after serving 1 week in jail and both got 1 year probation, both were multiple offenders. The systems fucked.

Not to take away from you, baddog. I would be damn proud of my son also. I just really carry alot of hostility towards police because of my experience. I'm sure you understand. Congrats again.

Robocop?

Thats a simple OCR reader....it takes photo's at license plate level on the road, scans them with an OCR reader & spits text into their current look up system

i could program it for them in 3 hours using existing code

i like them being behind in technology though....i think shit like that & traffic camera's are a HUGE invasion of privacy

The way I look at it is that I am glad there are cops like my son and his friends out there to make up for the idiots.

Well, if you are a cop, or a social worker (and probably any other job like that) you can get your license number blocked so people can't merely go to the DMV and find out where you live.

I will have one of them put my car down as one they drive.

I've always looked at my cop issues this way... 85% of the officers I've encountered in my life have been decent, straight forward individuals. I've had a couple friends, and some family join the force and they are shining examples.

Same as with any industry (i.e. adult,entertainment,banking,whatever)... it only takes 10-15%, if even that, of their representatives to appear or act shady before that's all anyone can talk about. Negative press goes a lot further in people's minds then positive for whatever convoluted reasons.

Most cops are just people like us trying to make a living, pay a few bills, and hopefully enjoying and getting a sense of satisfaction out of their profession.

Interesting application. The pay-for-use freeway in Melbourne has cameras that can figure out licence plates in order to toll an account, but I'd never thought about it being mobile.

It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to image that they'd be implementing facial recognition technology in the near future as well. All you need to do is cruise around and wait until your computer beeps to let you know that it has found someone of interest........

It's impossible to read the plate from the side. That would be even harder than a satellite being able to read it from directly above your vehicle. Well beyond even Robocop.

Blocking your plate to stop someone getting your address from the DMV and blocking it so that the cop/scanner doesn't see your warrants are two completely different things.

Let's say for some reason you get pulled over and cops find out your kid was lying about your car being one they drive, wouldn't that put their job at risk?

Are you willing to ask your kid to do that for you?

That was the feature I found interesting . . . I guess in order for a car to be along side of you at one point it had to be in front or behind though.

when people sit back and do nothing the cops will do what they want.

they claim its to combat "car theft"

Quote:
The Lincoln Police Department has implemented a new technology to combat vehicle theft by installing an Automatic License Plate Reader system in a patrol vehicle.
this shit should be illegal and many Americans will agree that it is not right.

this is going on down here....

Quote:
The New Orleans City Council is scheduled to vote to authorize the use of red-light cameras in the city.

Lawyers said the red-light cameras don’t establish the identity of traffic violators.

But city leaders said the system doesn’t have to ID violators because of the types of citations that will be issued.

Vehicles are photographed, video taped and sensors in the ground track the vehicle’s speed.

So if it runs a red light, makes an illegal turn or is clocked going too fast, a ticket is mailed to the address of the corresponding license plate number.

yup. that is absolutely true.

LAPD already has cars like this on the road, as does the CHP.

personally, i prefer this.

heres one fact that they left out....

out of state vehicles with out of state plates, wont bring up any info.

As a person living in new orleans with California plates, if a NOLA cop wants to run my plate, he cannot do it from his patrol vehicle, he has to take me in to the station where they have a more thorough database. The idea is NOPD is NOT connected to LAPD database ... not in any way, from the vehicle.

This has nothing to do with warrants or stolen vehicles, however, out of state plates cannot be looked up from patrol vehicles yet, unless they have some kind of "this car was used in murder" or something tag/flag, not sure how it works, but i know NOLA cops cant just run your plate from their car if it out of state.

so, while this would keep californians in line, it does nothing to those who drive through or are in an area with out of state tags/
