I've found friends on there that I haven't talked to in 10 years. I can't get that at the pub.

Everyone i know over here seems to use Bebo. I HATE it !!
My girlfriend uses it, and now all of a sudden, "friends" of hers which she hasn't spoken to in years are all appearing acting like they are best friends with her. Bullshit ! Why did it take a site like that to appear before they speak to each other then ?? I know people who have over 300 friends on their list. Again Bullshit ! I also hate how when ever anyone goes on a night out to a club etc, the first thign they do when they come back home, is post the damn pics on their page! Pathetic. I'm sick of everyone asking me "have you got a bebo page?" when i go out now... |

I haven't read the article yet and I don't use facebook, but damn, from your quote it sounds like that editor has sour grapes. It's a site that allows you to connect with people you haven't seen in years and people whom you can't hang out with all the time (since people tend to move to different cities and countries after highschool), and can be used for dating etc. They're a business, so at the end of the day, they're trying to find ways to make money from it. Vanity sells. Publishing a "how-to" book sells.

I signed up to facebook recently to look up some old names and reminisce a little. I'm not really interested in participating in chain letter wall posts and "who do you look like" tests, wtf is that for?

Actually, I attended a seminar about facebook presented by Jeremiah Owyang, he's a Sr Analyst at Forrester Research and an expert on Facebook, and you would be absolutely surprised just how valuable a tool it has become, and how far-reaching.
Here's a few little tidbits to tantalize your tastebuds........ Facebook has experienced 200% growth in a year period. The average visitor on Facebook stays 20 minutes. Users are primarily college-educated and vastly considered to be white-collar. Over 80 million users and growing. Over 40% of the users of Facebook are over the age of 35... Anyone with half a marketing brain should have bells and whistles going off... But in this industry, probably not. We as an industry have become absolutely so far behind the curve of where the consumer markets really are that I almost can't believe that we can all be so blind. The worst part is the refusal to accept change.... but it's always been this way with people clinging to old methods that worked, if it ain't broke don't fix it kind of mindset. When I talk about some of this stuff people look at me like I grew a second head. All I have to say to that, is look where some of us will be in 5 years in a completely different market of generation y, and look where the dinosaurs will be. |
