    Zuckerberg & Facebook

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n3697442.shtml

What the fuck is Facebook? Myspace?

I mean i never registered and don't plan to sign up anytime soon.

What is this all about? Why should i go there? Please try to convince me!

    $15,000,000,000? Holy crap

Scary article on the Guardian website.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...an/14/facebook

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you". But hang on. Why on God's earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

And does Facebook really connect people? Doesn't it rather disconnect us, since instead of doing something enjoyable such as talking and eating and dancing and drinking with my friends, I am merely sending them little ungrammatical notes and amusing photos in cyberspace, while chained to my desk? A friend of mine recently told me that he had spent a Saturday night at home alone on Facebook, drinking at his desk. What a gloomy image. Far from connecting us, Facebook actually isolates us at our workstations.

Facebook appeals to a kind of vanity and self-importance in us, too. If I put up a flattering picture of myself with a list of my favourite things, I can construct an artificial representation of who I am in order to get sex or approval. ("I like Facebook," said another friend. "I got a shag out of it.") It also encourages a disturbing competitivness around friendship: it seems that with friends today, quality counts for nothing and quantity is king. The more friends you have, the better you are. You are "popular", in the sense much loved in American high schools. Witness the cover line on Dennis Publishing's new Facebook magazine: "How To Double Your Friends List."

I've found friends on there that I haven't talked to in 10 years. I can't get that at the pub.
    This is me on facebook

Everyone i know over here seems to use Bebo. I HATE it !!

My girlfriend uses it, and now all of a sudden, "friends" of hers which she hasn't spoken to in years are all appearing acting like they are best friends with her. Bullshit ! Why did it take a site like that to appear before they speak to each other then ?? I know people who have over 300 friends on their list. Again Bullshit !

I also hate how when ever anyone goes on a night out to a club etc, the first thign they do when they come back home, is post the damn pics on their page! Pathetic.

I'm sick of everyone asking me "have you got a bebo page?" when i go out now...

I haven't read the article yet and I don't use facebook, but damn, from your quote it sounds like that editor has sour grapes. It's a site that allows you to connect with people you haven't seen in years and people whom you can't hang out with all the time (since people tend to move to different cities and countries after highschool), and can be used for dating etc. They're a business, so at the end of the day, they're trying to find ways to make money from it. Vanity sells. Publishing a "how-to" book sells.

I signed up to facebook recently to look up some old names and reminisce a little. I'm not really interested in participating in chain letter wall posts and "who do you look like" tests, wtf is that for?

Actually, I attended a seminar about facebook presented by Jeremiah Owyang, he's a Sr Analyst at Forrester Research and an expert on Facebook, and you would be absolutely surprised just how valuable a tool it has become, and how far-reaching.

Here's a few little tidbits to tantalize your tastebuds........

Facebook has experienced 200% growth in a year period.
The average visitor on Facebook stays 20 minutes.
Users are primarily college-educated and vastly considered to be white-collar.
Over 80 million users and growing.
Over 40% of the users of Facebook are over the age of 35...

Anyone with half a marketing brain should have bells and whistles going off...

But in this industry, probably not. We as an industry have become absolutely so far behind the curve of where the consumer markets really are that I almost can't believe that we can all be so blind. The worst part is the refusal to accept change.... but it's always been this way with people clinging to old methods that worked, if it ain't broke don't fix it kind of mindset. When I talk about some of this stuff people look at me like I grew a second head. All I have to say to that, is look where some of us will be in 5 years in a completely different market of generation y, and look where the dinosaurs will be.

Keep in mind too that Myspace is a completely different demographic, pretty much devoted to media heads and young people. Facebook is a more generic platform that users can adapt to serve their needs as they see them. Very important distinction the way they cater to their audiences
