Hal does have an incredible body, true, but beyond that he's one of the most amazing people I've ever met! I'd try to imitate some of that if anything...

It's possible. I've a genetic tendency to go fat, and since I hate it, I exercise A LOT. Still, only once in my life I got cut and ripped and it took a lot of sacrifice, but it can be done. Now I'm trying to do that for the second time, so here's what I'm doing (it may help you or it may not)

First, I had some overweight, so I started a diet. No gym, because I'm a weight lover and that makes me hungry, so I eat. Hence, diet and no gym to start. It took me 2 months (I lost around 16 pounds, including some muscle). I only did some push-ups, walking and stuff like that.

Second: on to the gym. 15 mins of bike, all muscle groups with lots of repetitions and little weight. The only muscle group I pay special attention is... ABS. After that, 15 mins of fast walking with a huge inclination (I'm a smoker so it costs me a lot to run) and that's it. btw, at the same time started taking a fat burner. Right after the gym, PROTEINS (tuna, chicken breast, egg) . This cycle went for 1 month

Now some fun, more weight, working 2 muscle groups per day (I work out 2 days-1 rest-3 days-1 rest). Of course cardio remains and I start doing some serious abs exercises (up to 500 repetitions a day, EVERYDAY). By the end of the 1st month of this cycle, I gained some weight but guess it was all muscle since I looked way slimmer. My abs aren't cut but they are hard as a rock. I'm finishing the 3rd month of this cycle, on the second month started taking whey protein supplements (and left the fat burner) and this month I'm taking creatine (and left whey protein). Right now I look way bigger than Hal but not even close to that muscle definition, lol. Aw, almost forgot: drink LOTS of mineral water and no alcohol (sorry)

Another thing: I'm not looking for a extremely lean and cut body ala Hal so I take creatine, but if you're looking for that, I wouldn't recommend creatine since you'll grow big and it demands you to eat

So, I don't know if I'll get extremely ripped as before, but what I did the first time was 2 months of weight lifting /1 month of extreme repetition for almost a year. And as I said, I'm a smoker, I've a genetical tendency to grow fat, and I'm not very young so yes, it's possible. Or at least, it's possible to get into a nice physical shape, which is great anyways.

I forgot: after this growth cycle, I start a definition cycle with superseries, lots of repetitions, little weight and a tighter diet. After that I hope I'll be able to yell "SPARTAAAA!!!"

As redshoe has pointed out and even like he said the show bullshit covered it very well. It is mostly genetics. Sure we can all have healthy bodies but that is it. Working out will not define to much beyond what your genes tell it to.

I am skinny, I will always be skinny. When I tried to bulk up I just got stronger but for example my arm diameter stayed the damn same. I called it at the time the mountain climbers syndrome as I had no other idea when I was that age. I would ride my bike everywhere, I was super active, and I rarely if ever got to eat crappy food. I also did weight training and hell I was living on an honest to god farm with real farm work. Nadda! I just got stronger but my body did not change.

Putting on size isn't purely genetics, honestly. Your problem sounds like diet. The biggest thing most people who don't grow forget to concentrate on is diet. Diet is MORE important than lifting hard when trying to grow. You should of been eating a couple of chickens from your farm after each workout, than you might of grown! Go on bodybuilding forums and look at the skinny guy transformations that have done it naturally. If they just lifted weights they would of stayed skinny no matter how hard they tried, but they naturally can afford to go nuts and eat eat eat to put on size. Of course you want it to be the right foods/mix.

not to make this thread about me, but my tits were pretty perfect before my boob job(s). i LOVE big tits, and wanted them on myself - that's not something you'd ever get working out and eating right.

so as to not make this thread about me, someone said this thread was useless without pics:

for anyone in this thead that is saying that your physical appearance is mostly based on genetics is a cop-out. most people that aren't healthy and are considered fat, got there because they have no discipline, are lazy, eat poorly (and too much) and/or use genetics as an excuse.

do some heavy people have a genetic disadvantage? sometimes, yes. but that doesnt mean they have to relegate themselves to being fat and unhealthy for the rest of their lives. hard work and discipline goes a long way.

I think the "genetics" point that I would try to make is simply that you need to acknowledge your basic body type and then work to maximize it.

Gunner has maximized his larger form. I've maximized my thin one (at times). I doubt either of us could EVER get our bodies to look like each other.

You probably didn't eat nearly enough calories...diet is the MAIN reason why people can't gain quality weight (muscle).

Holy shit, tons of dumb people here.

Genetics play a big part, but 95 % of the people can look ripped if they have an extreme dedication.

A work out routine was never mentioned. Pushups, situps, etc is to broad. It's like saying "I lift weights. And I run on the treadmill" instead of saying I run 5 7-minute miles consecutively. Anyway, This could be the answer

BULLSHIT. A fit physique is 1% genetics and 99% of discipline and hard work. Regular workouts in the gym, extreme dedication to a high protein/low carb diet and a high degree of patience.

What better excuse to pick for people that are blaming their own conditioning on their "bad genes" while they fork in junk food day and night and go through a couple gallons of soda every week.

Did THIS GUY have good genetics in 2003? Or did his genes suddenly change once he started dieting and working out?

Anyone can be lean and muscular to varying degrees, depending on your build, but you have to have discipline and exercise hard, lifting weights and doing some cardio and eating really well all in combination.

The proof in what I am saying is the endless examples of former out of shape, overweight people who made a startling transformation to their physiques by applying the principles of lifting weights, eating very healthy (and not overeating) and doing some cardiovascular exercise.

Anyone saying you need great genetics or saying that they have slow metabolisms, thyroid imbalances or a myriad of other nonsense excuses as to why they personally can't get lean and ripped don't know what they are talking about or are downright full of shit.
100% correct
healthy & good food, discipline, and routine

This thread made me bi-curious.

;)

Its all about that lower abs 'V' ... thats the last piece of it that i've never quiet nailed. I think a lot of that has to do with body angle and pose though.

A lot of hard work. It takes a life-long commitment of proper diet and fitness. For some, it will require being more strict (since some ppl gain weight faster than others - different metabolism among other things) but it can be accomplished. It can take months of hard work before beginning to see results which is why so many give up along the way. It helps to keep equipment around that can measure you body fat, metabolic rate, (like a http://www.tanita.com/ scale) etc so you can measure your progress even if it's not immediately noticeable by the naked eye.
