Here's a clue for some of you....

When you ICQ someone and say:
"Hey"
or
"I have a question."
or
"U there?"
or
"lmk when you're on"

You are wasting time. Simply say what you need to say and get on... Whoever is on the other end can then form a response to you. Simply asking "Are you on?" is absolutely pointless and annoying. The person DOES NOT NEED to be on in most cases. I'm sure they'll get your messages when they do log on and if it's important, they'll get back to you.

The accronyms brb or bbl or afk or ttyl were all invented for this atrocity.

Too many people complain about ICQ when in fact they've only contributed to screwing up the system in the first place.

1. Being set on "away" or "invisible" ALL THE TIME really defeats the purpose of the status system. If you really don't want to be bothered, perhaps it's time you learned how to turn it off, or get a new # or.... oh, I don't know... tell people you don't want to be bothered?

2. Leaving ICQ on 24/7 on an INSTANT messenger is rather ironic... how instantly will you respond 2 hours into your 6-8 hour sleep? If you're not there, don't leave it on. There are offline messages.

Perhaps if everyone did this, there wouldn't be "Are you there?" messages anymore.

And don't even get me started on "hey, you there?" messages that you respond to and then have to wait 20+ minutes for them to get back to you again with what it is they wanted in the first place.
Ask if I'm here if you have to, but when I say yes... HAVE THE DECENCY TO BE THERE YOURSELF!

I have the same mentality with icq as i do with my cell phone. i pay the bill for it, i'll use it how i like.

i leave mine on 24-7, its great for people around the world to leave messages when i am asleep and its 2pm for them, but 2am for me.

people always get pissed at me for not answering my cell phone, and i tell them if they want to pay the bill, i will answer anytime they call. as long as i pay the bill, its my luxury to use as i see fit.

if i want to leave my icq on 24-7 with an away message asking to state what you like and i'll get back to you later, and i pay the bill for my internet, thats the way it works.

life doesn't revolve around someone dropping a hat at one possibly inopportune moment and thinking that if you don't get a response back that very second that they aren't important. we work in a global environment with global requirements.

i prefer to get all icqs in real time and answer them in the order they come in at my earliest convenience the next time i sit down at the computer.

I have gotten used to the "dumbing down" of conversation due to chat programs. What ICQ needs is a built in translation service so we at least have the impression of a real conversation.

It would work something like this for incoming messages:

y0 - Translated: Hello how are you today?

Need dem banners 4 teen page- Translated: Could you please tell me where I can get banners for the new teen tour?

And after the conversation is over if the user on the other end doesn't at least say good bye it would do it for them.

Anyone want to code this? ;)

I've probably done the same, but usually I try to spit it out because if I don't.. by the time I got a response I'd have forgotten what I msg'd for in the first place.

I ask that first sometimes... depending on who Im asking... i usually ask that first after i know how the person reacts to questions during work time... if its after hours... you will most likely (if you talk to me in the night) get one of the wierdest conversations of your day, whether you like it or not...

Normally when people call me on ICQ they get to the point. You must have a lot of people calling you for you to get pissed at the small things... ^^

I have heard some of you say the complete opposite about ICQ. I remember someone saying on here that if someone does't at least say "Hi, how are you today?" they won't answer. However, this mainly pertained to people they've never talked to before. So I've always made sure I was polite when first ICQ'ing someone. Some might even think it's rude even after you've met them.... if you just ask the question without saying "hi" first.

I agree and have a similar issue with one guy on my list. We'll be talking about something and then he's gone for like 2 hours. Then he'll come back and continue the conversation like he never left lol!

agreed

the "are you on?" comment starting a conversation might also be important to determine whether an email may be more appropriate

How about stating your business or introducing yourself when asking to be added to someones list. It's only polite. I wouldnl't let a stranger in my front door without knowing who it is first.

Ha that's one of my biggest peeves with our office staff...they always message me on our internal messenger with 'Keith?' as their first message...every damn time!

Like what am I supposed to reply, 'No Keith's not here right now.' Just ask he question you want to ask directly!!

Sorry, have to disagree with you on this point. I know our clients don't have a problem leaving questions for me while I am away (or asleep) as they know they will be responded to ASAP, and they can read it when they wake up.

I've posted this same sentiment maybe half a dozen times on GFY in the past 6 years. The "You there?" posts have always bothered me, they are annoying and completely empty-headed. Some people just don't seem to be able to figure out that ICQ isn't like a lot of other instant messengers in that the other person doesn't have to be on in order for you to leave them a message.

I leave mine on much of the time, in "Away" mode, and I do it because if I'm not right here at the computer I at least know the person will get my "away" message.

yeah its a lot easier to ask 'are you there?' and be ignored then it is to write out the whole complaint, question, feedback etc etc and be ignored, Until people start using inviisible as a way to say im busy instead of 'leave a message I (( MIGHT )) get back to you', i'll stick with the route with least resistance, there are people on my list that i rather waste keystrokes on that i know will respond.

The difference is if you send a "r u there?" chances are you WILL be ignored, whereas (at least with me) if you send the question or say what you need to say there's an unbelievably good chance you WILL get an answer.

With you maybe, but you isnt everyone. If someone messages me i answer, if i dont want to talk to them i tell them that. Too many people sit there behind invisible and it seems to bring out the prick in them.

that's a good clue for most Voodoo... however there are some reps/owners who even when you ask a question, spell out what you need or whatever... they only ever hit you back up when you're not around with...

'hey' 'you still here' or the best of all 'hit me up again next time you're online'

I do all of those except the last one...

I use ICQ as more of a paging system then an instant messenger... it seems to me like most people I know do the same. It's an easy way to send quick messages, whether the person is there or not.

I don't mind people asking if I am on. What does annoy me though is when I will get a daily message from somebody for four days straight. Just one message saying "are you there", everyday. Obviously we are in different time zones... just leave a message!

Anyone sending me a proper message gets a reply, always.

Send me a "you there?" messages and I'll probably answer that too.

with "no" :D

I realize some guys are outright pricks. The thing is they're going to be pricks no matter what you send as a message. At least if I just say what it is that's on my mind up front I'm not waiting for them to get back to me with "yes I'm here, what is it you want?"

That empty back and forth shit just doesn't sit well with me. That's the way it is.

I understand what your getting at, in a sense i thin the whole system is screwed up. invisibility is often over abused and usually the only time i use 'are you there?' is when im looking for someone for a job they have thier icq numbers on thier design page and im looking for a someone to do the job this second. Unfortunately there has been numerous times where i do a whole paragraph right off the bat. and it never gets answered either.
