You are wasting time. Simply say what you need to say and get on... Whoever is on the other end can then form a response to you. Simply asking "Are you on?" is absolutely pointless and annoying. The person DOES NOT NEED to be on in most cases. I'm sure they'll get your messages when they do log on and if it's important, they'll get back to you.

I've posted this same sentiment maybe half a dozen times on GFY in the past 6 years. The "You there?" posts have always bothered me, they are annoying and completely empty-headed. Some people just don't seem to be able to figure out that ICQ isn't like a lot of other instant messengers in that the other person doesn't have to be on in order for you to leave them a message.
I leave mine on much of the time, in "Away" mode, and I do it because if I'm not right here at the computer I at least know the person will get my "away" message.
