1. Being set on "away" or "invisible" ALL THE TIME really defeats the purpose of the status system. If you really don't want to be bothered, perhaps it's time you learned how to turn it off, or get a new # or.... oh, I don't know... tell people you don't want to be bothered?
2. Leaving ICQ on 24/7 on an INSTANT messenger is rather ironic... how instantly will you respond 2 hours into your 6-8 hour sleep? If you're not there, don't leave it on. There are offline messages.
Perhaps if everyone did this, there wouldn't be "Are you there?" messages anymore.
And don't even get me started on "hey, you there?" messages that you respond to and then have to wait 20+ minutes for them to get back to you again with what it is they wanted in the first place.
Ask if I'm here if you have to, but when I say yes... HAVE THE DECENCY TO BE THERE YOURSELF!

I do all of those except the last one...
I use ICQ as more of a paging system then an instant messenger... it seems to me like most people I know do the same. It's an easy way to send quick messages, whether the person is there or not.
I don't mind people asking if I am on. What does annoy me though is when I will get a daily message from somebody for four days straight. Just one message saying "are you there", everyday. Obviously we are in different time zones... just leave a message!
