Instead of buying yet another external USB-HDD, I figured it would be more convenient to get a NAS system like these:

Lacie's are pretty cheap and looking sweet

They do lag the quality a little, but still pretty good..

The problem is that if you want some reliable NAS you need to spend at lesat $30k

These NAS "servers" you point in the ebay link are a SPF (Single Point of Failure) equipment.

This is something you could call a NAS:

Now that you know the price for a real NAS... you should know that in most cases there are failover solutions that are much cheaper and give you very similar grade of performance and in most cases custom build storage clusters setup allows very fast recovery on a full server or multiple HDs crash than a NAS with a couple of HDs crashed at the same time.
If you think a RAID 5 will save your ass, then you should see how easy is it to crash 4 HDs at the same time when things go wrong.

If you are interested in some custom solution, then make me know. My hosting company specializes in clsuters and redundant solutions.

nas is way too much $

lacies are not bad but weve had 3 and they all had issues on the connectors after a while, id pick another brand, no fan so pretty warm casings as well

But I guess what I'm looking for is something for the (small) office, basically a server in which I can pool my HDs and backup all my stuff. Something simple and affordable

What he provided was real NAS
Was you provided was real NAS
What he provided was SPF
What you provided was SPF.
On a side note, obviously since he is speaking of external usb drives, he is not looking for high end SPF NAS servers.
As a company specialised in clusters and redundant solutions, you should not overlook the fact that a CPU and a motherboard is also a single point of failure

Get the cheapest PC in the store, load it with HDs and then share them over the network. that's what probably will fit your needs better and you will have a spare PC in case of need.

You should be amazed what kind of stuff bring our clients when they come to us. I have seen more than one big company running their entire data on the kind of "NAS" he pointed in the ebay link.
Our storage solutions are not a NAS + 20 servers hanging from it... it's a bit more custom a allow 5 minute recovery after a complete rack crash
