I've tried a few dozen and the absolute best I've found is PHP Designer 2007. It has the best autocompletion of functions and variables that I've seen... no matter how many includes deep you may have created them.

And the manual, doc and phpmyadmin integration is awesome. It's beaten all the others hands down for functionality, in my opinion. |

php designer is the best for me but it is not a wysiwyg editor like dreamweaver.

to code with php designer i use a template system to make the html in a separate place in dreamweaver and php code with phpdesigner. hope this helps. |

I use Zend IDE. It might not have the prettiest interface but I think it's the most functional one. The new version of Zend is based on Eclipse and looks very nice, alas the beta crashes on me at least 3 times a day.

whatever you decide on, be smart and save your work about every half hour, then the most you can loose due to power outage, computer reboot out of nowhere or other fuck ups is a half hours work.

	it happens. |

I've been using Rapid PHP now for a couple of years, and love it, but always looking to see what the next best thing is. Dreamweaver is good for laying out design stuff, but I wouldn't use it to code php.

UltraEdit is the best on the market for Windows, hands down. If you're developing in linux I reccomend Kate

I already posted what I use (eclipse). Then again, I'm more project based and lately have been working from a couple of different computers on the same projects. So, having an IDE that supports my needs: some code tips, syntax hilites, subversion integration, etc. helps me. Then again, a developer I'm working with uses Emacs with a couple of plugins. He gets around files / code faster than I can with his "snappy" finger clicks.... makes me remember when I used to use other programs and just found something I liked and stuck with. Then tried something new, got used to it and kicked the old bitch to the curb. Probably will happen with another development environment one day.

Zend Studio for large projects and scripts that require some kind of integration and advanced debug.

Jed or mcedit for small scripts.
