The Sims players, answer me this

yes I'm a little late on the uptake, having just checked out one of the early versions of it. My question is,

is this a game or a passtime?

I'm not really seeing a "game" here, all you seem to do is build, decorate and renovate houses and pretty much manage the lives of all the characters in the game. That about cover it?

Did anyone find this "game" addictive?

If it was 2001 again, it was kind of fun. Once you figured to 'pause' the game, fill the houses with stoves, and remove all doors, that is.

That lasted about 10 minutes.

Create a horror scene via mods and then it can get a little humorous or disturbing when you find your friends little sister doing that.

um..it is a game but it is generally an open ended 'sandbox' game. The newest add on which is a vacation based one does add on a bit more of a 'game' by giving more immediate goals. Sims2 with the ability for sims to be born and die of old age made it more of a game than Sims1.

Overall, it is playing dolls. I have enjoyed it a lot over time but I dip in and out of it these days rather than play for a long time.

I generally like Tycoon and God like games and so it plays to those likes. I generally get bored with games that involve shooting.

I'm not sure what that open-ended sandbox analogy means, but I'm just not seeing the "game" aspect here. To me a game implies I have to beat something in order to attain some sort of victory or end reward. In this game all you seem to have is, well, what you said... playing with dolls and doll houses.

The construction set is kind of amusing though, although I don't know how long that amusement will last with me. I have the Sims 2, the date in the opening credits says 2000 (or is it 2001? I forget)... and it's pretty tame in the mature content department. Are there more recent versions of the Sims that cater more to adults?

I bought Sims 2 for my 12 y/o niece. Interesting game for her and funny to laugh at but when she told me she made babies on it, I was a lil curious. I asked her "how do you make babies?" her response was "in the hot tub or in the bed" good lord....I sat her down and talked to her about the birds and the bees! rofl!

It's good for kid to learn about management I suppose. Essentially you are playing god with these characters tho so I guess it's not really a "game"

Sandbox game: You are given save, a shovel, and a bucket. As a kid, you could turn that into hours of fun. There was no real goal, no real destination except those that you made yourself. The "game" goes on until you either have to go inside to eat or you get bored of playing with sand.

There is no real win, just constant advancement and time wasted.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense. So I was basically correct when I said it's more a pastiime than a game.

You make your own goals, like in real life... and it's not really a game, but a simulator, kinda like a flight simulator...

You build and manage cities in Sim City, kinda pointless game too, but was fun when I was 12 or something, heh

Well, a sandbox game is still a game... it's just a different kind of game. Playing with star wars characters was a "game" as a kid.

MMO's are kinda like sandbox games, too - since you can never really "beat" them. But they're still considered "games"

Pretty much all of the Sim games are this kinda game... Sim Coaster (mid 90's, I think) was cool in that you could build and ride your own roller-coasters. Sim City was fun back in the day. This last Summer, I hit up Sim City 2000 for craps and giggles, and had fun for a week or so, but soon found myself bored.

I've never gotten into "The Sims" for pretty much the same reasons you're describing not being into it... I knew ahead of time there wouldn't be much point in it.... no place where I could say I was "done" with it except by my own boredom.

I'm too old for action figures, I think. :-)

Played them all and enjoyed them all and I like you I don't have much time for them anymore. Though, I may be tempted by the new Simcity that is coming out.

I get that they aren't the sort of 'set pathway' game a lot of people play but there are a lot of people that don't really play that sort of game and that is what The Sims has tapped into. Regardless it is 'play'.

done many times

fireworks in the house without a fire alarm has been fun at times.

Then back in Sims1 there was this one Sim that just wouldn't die...so, I lured him into a room and then took away the door. It was slow but it worked.
