I'm not sure what that open-ended sandbox analogy means, but I'm just not seeing the "game" aspect here. To me a game implies I have to beat something in order to attain some sort of victory or end reward. In this game all you seem to have is, well, what you said... playing with dolls and doll houses.
The construction set is kind of amusing though, although I don't know how long that amusement will last with me. I have the Sims 2, the date in the opening credits says 2000 (or is it 2001? I forget)... and it's pretty tame in the mature content department. Are there more recent versions of the Sims that cater more to adults?
