Reminder: Vista still sucks

I just got a new computer for my stepfather, and it has Vista on it. Worst OS ever. Slow as fuck on a brand new pc with decent hardware (2gb mem, 2ghz dual core processor, etc), and it took a whole 10 minutes for the first crash to happen.

I can't believe MS is actually incapable of creating an OS which can handle the rather simple needs of a mentally handicapped man (writing two lines a day in MS word, checking his Yahoo mail, playing solitaire and playing a single flash-based online game) without causing major headaches.

I can feel you dude. Personally I will stay with Win. XP for at least 1 year from now. Vista is full of bugs now. Not Recommended

Didn't have a choice. His old pc died yesterday, and if stuff doesn't work, he panics. So, he needed a new one right away - and there was nothing with XP readily available.

No, I can't. The computer is for a mentally handicapped man, who can go in a panic when the spell check in MS Word goes on and there are suddenly red lines in his documents. Anything more than that, and it gets REALLY bad.

Basically, I have to make everything look exactly the same as it did before.

FUCK!

I will never, ever, EVER buy another Microsoft product again. In fact, right now, I'm praying that the bowels of hell open up beneath Redmond and swallow up the MS offices.

The only good thing I have to say about it is that I won't ever have to use it myself.

First run: after a few moments, it decides to hang and not respond to anything anymore.
Second run: see first run.
Third run: installing and activating Works 2006. First attempt causes icons to be made and programs to be installed, none of which actually respond to anything.
Fourth run: see first run.
Fifth run: Works works! Now, it wants to be activated. Since the last install of that package (separately bought, not OEM) was on the previous, now dead pc, it refuses to be activated over the internet.
...
etc.

I will never buy another MS product again.

Instead of having 500 different versions linux , they should all band together then they could give microsoft a real run for their money the time is right.

My p4 3.2 takes minutes to boot.. than when you finally see icons and you think i can start working the machine keeps doing shit in the background for like ages!
Vista has put my PC in the middle ages.. I'm done with Microsoft and ordered an Imac today replacing it..

I keep putting off buying a new laptop for this exact reason.

Figure my old klunker will do the job until Vista works better.

If it wasn't for the fact that every once in awhile I like to play a game or two, I'd consider making my new one a Mac.

Get a mac, and use bootcamp when you want to play games under windows.

Vista seriously isn't worth it, and my experience with mac laptops is absolutely great (I still have one that survived three non-mac laptops).

I don't know what you people smoke there, I haven't had any problems with vista, runs very smoothly more stable than XP, less ram consuming than XP and definitely faster ... the only thing I hated is user control feature which I promptly found out how to disable - now I don't get those annoying confirms every time I try to do something.. I also first time I got it I reformat everything as I'm not found of all extra pre-installed stuff that manufacturers push on them.
works like a charm.

I'm worried about graphical performance, though.

Everything I've read has said that most PC games on macs are a lot slower - some to the point that it's not even worth bothering.... especially anything new.

Of course, the old-school stuff could keep me occupied for the brief periods I find time to game... but, a gamer at heart, I'd like the option to have access to anything new as well.

If they had a Macbook that could run Civ 4 without graphical lag for under $1,500 - I'd probably buy my first Apple product since my old ][e.

With boot camp, you're just running windows on the same hardware, so performance should not be a big problem. It's when you run windows virtually that performance suffers.

On the other hand, with future games, it will become a problem... but that's the same with all hardware. Half a year after you buy it, it's dated

I've been using it for 3 months, on a dell laptop, 2 gigs of ram, I really haven't had a problems with it. If I shut off the widgets, it would run faster, but for now, it runs damn fast and with the new processors, the battery life is really good. I really think if you spent a little time configuring it, you'd be just as happy with it

Let me guess you got him a HP or something like that that comes with a ton of preloaded stuff that also starts at startup? Try turning some of the extra stuff off on loading and see how it runs

I've heard a lot of complaints from HP users

I've used computers professionally for close to a decade, and have used tons of operating systems. I've also cleaned up and fixed dozens if not hundreds of windows installations.

This is, by far, the worst OS I've used so far.

A simple example: Windows Live Messenger wouldn't work. I had to get all available Vista updates before it worked.

Think about that for a moment - their own bloody software doesn't work on their own OS without tweaking. That's a fuckup of EPIC proportions. It means they didn't fully test compatibility with their own software.

It is not a software issue. Unfortunately, the high end graphics cards are only available for the PC platform. Macs have a different type of bios and while you can probably install a Mac video card in a PC, you cannot do it the other way around. The brand new Imac comes with the ATI HD2600 PRO. Also the Imac has a lot of laptop parts so that card will probably not be upgradeable. The best you can get with the Mac Pro is the ATI X1900XT. While those cards are alright, they don?t even perform at half of the rate of the high-end PC cards. You can do some mild gaming but you can forget about playing the newest games at high resolutions. I have always like apple and their products and they have pros and cons. The bottle line, however, is that if you are very concerned about gaming you pretty much have to go with a PC. Gaming is just not a priority for apple.

Also the Imac has a lot of laptop parts so that card will probably not be upgradeable. The best you can get with the Mac Pro is the ATI X1900XT. You're right, for hardcore gamers macs aren't a good choice (neither is Vista in its current state, though - XP is still faster with most games, and few games make any significant use of DirectX 10).

For occasional gamers, performance is more than good enough. The HD2600 PRO is a decent video card, and more than enough to run fairly new games at decent settings.

The post I was responding to mentioned CIV 4... which should run perfectly well on a mac with a decent amount of memory.

XP had problems when it was new. Memory just fades over time. Your users are buying boxes with Vista on them. You should be familar with any quirks. IE displays slightly different on Vista.

Happy with the Vista box even though it won't run everything I need to. So I remote into an XP box in my network. Suggest you get the 4Gb L2 cache version of the CPU & 4 Gig Ram.

Did you read the first post?

This PC is not for me. It's for someone who will only use it to write a line or two in a single Word document each day, check his Yahoo mail, and play Solitaire and Bubble Shooter. Literally. That's it. Nothing more, ever.

Getting 4 gigs of ram for that would be insane.

Vista's great if you know what you're doing. Otherwise stick with XP or buy a Mac.

Most people who think they know what they're simply don't, that's just the way it is. How long you're been using a computer doesn't matter. I've known people that have been using computers daily for 20+ years and still don't know dick, relatively speaking.

Though I can understand the frustration, Vista isn't really noob friendly at all. Even though that's what MS was trying to accomplish.

I took a couple classes and learned a couple languages, like Java and Mechanical, it makes more sense then

So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
think about that
