I don't know how to think of what just happened in my life. My mom died monday, and I held her hand the whole time. She even squeezed my hand during the last min. The last breath was the hardest.

So I wont be around for the rest of aug while I bury my mom.

I would give anything to be able to say the same for my grandmother who passed away recently. If there can be any small comfort in this time let it be that she was not alone and that in her final moments on Earth, she had her loving son by her side.

my condolenses, i've been there, watching your parent's last moments on earth is a surreal experience, you know it's happening but you've only seen it before in movies but there you are and it's real life and you want life to go into reverse or wake up to realize it's a bad dream but it won't happen.

being there with her holding her hand really was a wonderful thing for you and her, probably the most important thing you have ever done. parents are there for us when we come into the world, the natural progression of life being what it is we should be there for them when it's their time to go, if possible of course. families get so spread out across a country and the world these days that i think a lot of people don't get to do what you did.

As sad as it was, feel fortunate that you could be with her as she left...

My Mother died unexpectedly, the day before my birthday. My Father called me, I thought to tell me happy birthday, but instead it was to break the news.

I was heartbroken, and so many years later still get depressed around my birthday.

How I wish I could have hugged her one more time and told her how much I loved her.

Not to sound trivial, but I was there as my most recent cat died of kidney failure. We knew she would die, so we fed her a last supper of salmon, which I could tell she enjoyed even though she probably knew as well that it was her last supper.

Even a loss such as that teaches you so much about life...and how to appreciate every day you are alive, and all those around you whom you love and hold precious.

I feel for your loss and wish you strength as you mourn and then move on with your life.

I am sorry to hear about your loss but you did the right thing. My mother did the same thing with her father and it was painful but as time went by she knew he was with the people he loved when he died. I would love to have had that with my husband rather than being rushed out of the room by doctors, etc. So, it will hurt but it was the right thing in the long run.

Sorry to hear that Joe. Its not easy losing a parent, or anyone really close to you for that matter. Especially when you are there for their final moments.

That stays with you for a long time. Be sure to spend lots of time with your family and close friends and talk about all the good times etc. It really does help.
