There is nothing to it. Defeats the purpose of music entirely.

There are genres out there that will never see the light of day, with rabid rabid fan bases. People who make little or no money at all. I know, I am putting out their music. They do it for the love of the scene, for the love of the music. Not so one day they can fuck teenage girls and have mad bling.

Top 40 is for people that dont realize that music exists outside of radio and mtv. Mindless pathetic drones that gobble down and embrace whatever mtv tells them to. Nothing makes me sicker than someone who lists their top 10 and all you see are video bands. All that proves to me is you are cattle. You bought into it.

As for bands sucking after they sell out. You telling me its not the truth? Remember Metallica back in 87? Listened to them lately? Hear what happened to Hatebreed? Absolute Kings of Hardcore reduced to nothing overnight. Their old fanbase gone, replaced by kids who shop at hot topic. All integrity gone.

There is nothing good about being the flavor of the week.
How did you get inside my head and mirror my thoughts exactly? Most top 40 music is just background noise, meant to be catchy and used to sell products once it's been sucked dry in every other market. Here's a perfect example: Even though I actually met the band many years ago, when they were still local and just playing bars, etc. and though they actually are quite a talentec band, if I hear Nickleback's "How you remind me" one more fucking time...

Just another case of a good band doing a bad thing. Sure they made mad cake for their singles, and won all the fluff awards, and good for them that they have the most played song in the History of radio in the United States, but are they familiar with the term "Overexposed"?

better to be overplayed then to not to be played at all.

With your reasoning, you would say

Owning joeschmoeshighqualityporn.com would be better the owning cybererotica.com because its "not as exposed and popular"

Guess what your wrong.

MrBling,

Are you saying you'd rather have millions of dollars than the respect of 500 people in your local town? (gasp) What horrible value you must have. ;-)

What high school are you going to?

Evidently english class was not popular enough for you. But then again, everyone knows the computer geeks were the popular kids in school. No need to learn to speak properly when you have all that mad pr0n bling you made off your warez sites and gallery postings. Right?

Punkworld,

Come on. I answered all your philosophy questions within 30 minutes of waking up yesterday. My quiz has been here on the board all day and night and you just ignore it. What're you afraid of?

10 Question Quiz for Punkworld:

1. What was Socrates' mom's name?
2. Did Rousseau masturbate?
3. Are rainbows real?
4. Name three philosophers whose works burned in the Library of Alexandria.
5. Are UFOs visiting Earth?
6. Why does Voltaire begin his poem "A Horace" by discussing pussy?
7. Are atoms real?
8. Can we consider the Rolling Stones to be philosophers?
Example:

You can't always get what you want
but if you try sometime
you just might find
you get what you need

9. What is Labret's philosophy of existentialism?
(No cheating)
10. Why are most people bored by philosophy?

He's not gonna take it. Why? Because those are not from the book, but they're applied. It's hard when you cannot copy someone's text
But interesting questions you got there, anyway.
Would love to see some comments for some of the questions.

h-e-l-l-o? punkass?

ok ok ok ok .... Colin is not being fair. lets start with easier questions:

1) your mouse is on the end of the mousepad but you want to continue moving the curser, do you-

a) move your desk in the direction you want to move the cursor
b) move your computer in the direction you want to move the cursor
c) lift your mouse off the pad and move it to the other side.
d) turn your monitor on its side and shake it to move the cursor further
e) none of the above

take your time.

1. What was Socrates' mom's name?

ëåîéêü äåí âñÞêå êáìßá ëÝîç

2. Did Rousseau masturbate?

Only from a distance.

3. Are rainbows real?

Rainbow skittles are real.

Must have been a couple of Greek guys - maybe Homer, Sophocles and Plautus.

5. Are UFOs visiting Earth?

Yes.

6. Why does Voltaire begin his poem "A Horace" by discussing pussy?

Because Horace was whipped.

7. Are atoms real?

Mrs. Egoyan certainly hopes so.

8. Can we consider the Rolling Stones to be philosophers?
Example:

You can't always get what you want
but if you try sometime
you just might find
you get what you need

Yes.

9. What is Labret's philosophy of existentialism?
(No cheating)

We exist therefore we hate Zionism.

10. Why are most people bored by philosophy?

I dont know, but all of a sudden I feel very tired.

You know, you're right that it's all about personal taste... which is purely subjective.

Would I rather have millions of dollars or the respect of 500 locals? I'd go with the respect. If I could have both, I'd take it... not that I'd keep the money, because I have no use for that much... but I could do a lot of good with it.

But respect comes first. Milly Vanilly made millions, and look where they ended up. There's your example of selling your soul to corporations for a few extra bucks.

But that's just my personal choice. Some people like pop music, and that's fine. Just because they don't like to be challenged by their music doesn't mean they don't want to be challenged in other areas... it doesn't make them idiots, or any less of a person. But personally, I like music that is art, rather than corporate-manufactured.

they are still millionaires. you only know who they are because they pulled their little scam off. Otherwise, they would still be people that most would beat the shit out of on the street because of that hair

if i had to choose between the respect of a harem of hot bimbos packed in my beach house who will massage me all day and the respect the people who think i am a turd burgler anyway while i exist in complete anonymity because i am a no talent shit... i choose the beach house, bimbos and nice cars.

Danny,

I agree with you. I think, if I remember correctly, that you and I played a very similar style of music in the late 80's and early 90's. Probably even had some of the same influences like Malmsteen, Dimeola, and Holdsworth.

I love Dimeola. His music moves me in both an emotional way and a technical way. Like "Race with the Devil on a Spanish Highway" by Al Dimeola. It's a mood that's created and I connect to it.

A guy like Malmsteen. Well, he moves me technically too. But also emotionally. But some people listen to it and they don't connect with it at all. It is too furious or they dismiss it as all fast and furious but no emotion. Yngwie does play with a emotion. A lot of it. But it's not blues emotion. It's his own thing and I get it.

Then there are a lot of stars where technique is
not important to them at all. They are just doing their thing. For example, I watched the Britney Spears concert (from Vegas) on tv the other night.
Now I don't care for her music much. I wouldn't buy a CD but I had no doubt from watching her that she really cared to put on a good show and to connect with her audience. Mostly through her dancing. Some songs she lip synched. Some she actually sang. But who cares? Her audience didn't care. Those people looked like they were having a GREAT time. It was definitely a very entertaining show and visually beautiful (the choreography, the sets. the "rain").

Fortunately, there are 6 billion people in this world and that produces much variety in both performance and taste. When I played guitar I loved when the audience related to what I was doing but it was REALLY COOL when musicians were impressed by what I was doing. I really got off on that. I understand that feeling. Both are genuine.

I like a lot of music. Some I don't like. I get what Labret listens to. I totally get it. It moves me in my own way. It makes me feel violent and I like that feeling. I fucking love a mosh pit, though I haven't been in one in years. I love banging bodies and trying to knock the other guy down. Testosterone madness. That's what *I* get from it. He probably gets something else out of it.

Yes.

There is no mosh as you describe it at a hardcore show. That style of "mosh" is reserved for the rednecks at a Pantera concert and is not tolerated at a hardcore show. I cringe when I hear someone calling running your sweaty ass into your drunk buddy... "mosh".

Trying to find some videos of real mosh.

http://trustkill.com/multimedia/videos/hellfest_dvd.php

Hellfest intro. This is the annual hardcore fest. The largest hardcore show you will ever see. Towards the beginning you will see mosh. Windmills, fist flying. Floor punching, karate looking shit. No slamming into everyone in sight. Stage dives, pile ons, and singalongs.

Notice not a stinky long haired metal kid or punk in sight. Its hardcore. Not metal. That is why all comparisons to those genres fail.

I bet the first time I mentioned "hardcore", it was the first time 99% of you ever heard of it or even knew the genre or scene even existed. Yes, there is music out there aside from what you see on MTV.

Yup! But who cares? That is good, right? I get my education anywhere I can get it, Labret. Present company included.

If you meet me in Vegas in January I'll show you some stuff you've never seen before and we can call it even.

"Windmills, fist flying. Floor punching, karate looking shit."

That sounds fun as shit! Do I need to take Karate lessons first or can I just wing it? Do I need to know a secret handshake to get in the door or do I just pay the doorguys there like everywhere else?

That is interesting. So just curious, which style of mosh came first?

Maybe I am mistaken but it sounds like you are getting uppity about what kind of mosh you are into. You are worse than my neighbors that think their art is better than mine.

Hmmm

My version came first. Hardcore has been around since the early 80s with bands like Negative Approach, Agnostic Front, Madball, Cro-Mags.

What you guys call mosh was what punks called "slam dancing" in the early 80s. Somewhere along the lines metal jocked the term mosh from hardcore.

So the analogy of the art is incorrect because your mosh is in fact not mosh. At all.

If you take some horse shit and call it steak, it does not mean that it really is steak. You just call it steak, and a real steak eater would call it what it is... shit.

Its not me being uppity. Its just that I know where mosh came from.

I am old like you, I was around for all the thrash and metal of the early and mid 80s. There was no moshing in 85 at a metal show. Maybe a circle pit and some skanking, but this thing you guys call mosh that involves slamming your sweaty ass into everyone around you I didnt notice in metal till the early 90s. Mosh had been going strong in hardcore for years before that.

As for my preference, as hardcore is the home of the only true mosh, I prefer it. It actually takes some skill. It has moves and technique. Running real fast into someone else is devoid of any and all skill.

Check your local listing, I do not know where you live, but there is bound to be a hardcore scene. Go to a show and watch. It will be an enlightening experience and I bet you will like it.

"So the analogy of the art is incorrect bacause your mosh is in fact not mosh. At all. "

I have seen people look at modern art and say "that is not art at all". Maybe you have had that experience before (with art) and know what I am saying. Hell, maybe you are one of them. I see no difference. It's a way to belittle something you don't like but doesn't say anything more than "I don't like that". You so feel that Mosh1 is superior to Mosh2 that you slander it by saying "it's not even mosh". Doesn't that sound silly? Just like the Nouveau Art Critics.

I have heard people say "That's not music. That's noise" and they are very serious.

People said the same thing about Stravinsky's music when he first appeared on the scene. In 1913 when "The Rite of Spring" was first played in Paris, the audience actually broke into a riot. Stravinsky's music was too dissonant among other things. "That's not music!"

Incidentally, 1913 is the last year that hard drugs were legal in the US and is also my street address. I'm not sure what the connection is. I suspect some strange and twisted conspiracy. We'll have to sort this out before it's too late.

lol, here you are in fantasy land again...

Of course if you ask Linkin park fans what hardcore is, they have no idea, but all my friends know what hardcore is... everyone at the "alternative" music store knows what it is....

Also, Hardcore isnt better music than everything else, you just like it better....

Is it arguable that it's better than pop, and rap? Yes, and I would agree with you. Is it an absolute fact, NO.

No need to get into a philosophy debate or be an elitist-ass about it. Its a matter of taste and relating to different stuff. Or even just growing up in a different environment.

To whoever said "popular = good" you are out of your mind and ARE a sheep. you will never discover anything different in your life, be it music or otherwise. You are devoid of personality.

also [LeBrat], you carefully avoided my comments/questions about Beck and the Beastie Boys... Im still curious...

Right. We wont distro to "alternative" stores.

Most hardcore is distro'd at the shows or via mail order.

I dont care if you can find Slipknot at WalMart, its not hardcore.

Labret, I plead with you, man. If they offer you kool-aid at the next hardcore show, don't drink it.
That's all I ask. Stay away from the kool-aid. They'll all tell you it'll make you different than the other kids. It's a trick, man. I've seen this kind of thing before.

ahahah, YOU dont distro? You mean THEY dont buy from you!

If they asked you, you would distro to anyone... Hardcore band or not, people play to be heard...

I know slipknot is fabricated... damn clowns... They had a CD before the corporate makeover and its VERY different. they changed singer, added two "custom perscussions" guys... My guess is that those guys are the 40 years olds [LeBrat] refers to so lovingly ;)

Dont have a driveway (nobody does downtown) so I have to move the car from one side of the street to the next, etc.
Have to pay parking meters... etc....

If they asked you, you would distro to anyone... Hardcore band or not, people play to be heard...

Every post you make only proves more and more that you know absolutely nothing.

When we do a run of 3k to 5k, and that is considered very decent for a hardcore band, it is pre-sold to the people who distro at shows before it even hits the presses. And with half a press being dedicated to vinyl, stores really wont touch it. Everyone in hardcore knows you buy your music from show distros. Ever been to a hardcore show? Evidently not.

Hardcore has a very loyal following and each release is eagerly anticipated.

What would be the point of Tower Records carrying the latest 36 Deadly Fist release? People buy what they know, and people dont know hardcore. It would sit on the shelves.

Why would a store buy from me when they wouldnt be able to sell it? Why would I sell to a store when I could sell to the kid who makes his money selling hardcore at shows. Why dont records stores carry the most popular releases from Apalachian clog music? Stores carry what they can sell. Do I sell straight teen porn from my gay sites?

Its called scene loyalty. Something cattle know nothing about.

This thread will not die until the return of Punkworld.

Someone told me he has been working on the answers to his fair turn at the quiz for 2 days now. Wants to make sure he gets all the answers perfect. He is even in consultation with 2 of his ex-philosophy professors and a physics professor.

Scary!

A Trustkill band. Why am I not surprised. The laughing stock label of hardcore next to Victory. They only thing worthwhile they do is Hellfest. The closest thing to corporate hardcore you will ever get.

Like metal jocked the term mosh, Trustkill decided to call their emo screamo bands hardcore.

The only good hardcore band on Trustkill is Despair. And why they ever went to Trustkill is beyond me. And probably why they broke up shorty thereafter.

Educate yourself and stop making a fool out of yourself.

"We thought it was kool-aid, because it was pink.
You know like maybe it was Tropical Punch or something. We all drank some and started to feel really strange. Someone, I can't remember much now but they were dressed in white - I think - dressed like a doctor, told me to drink some "Blue Moonberry" - said I was overheating and drinking it would cancel it out. That I was overheating. Overheating, yeah right! Then I had some of that and then next think ya know, BAM! here I am. Musta been some of those fucking Creed fans! Fucking losers!"
