Say I want to use a story that I purchased the rights to - if I change it up a bit, do I still have to worry about google detecting duplicate content somewhere on the internet?

Changing up the text of anything that is going to be reproduced on a large number of different websites, such as articles, would be recommended. If you have the exact same text on a whole bunch of pages, the Google duplicate content filters will kick in. However, this is just Google. The other search engines do not use anything like this, that I am aware of, at this time.

Duplicate content is a serious consideration when trying to build SEO.

That's why scrapers often screw up the ranks of those they steal the content from (until they get nailed).

The algo which G uses is far more sophisticated than you may think.

Simple "fixing up the text" will probably get nailed for dup content.

If you licensed the text legally, I'm surprised your agreement does not limit you to a single use of that text, Unless it's marketing prose, if you're seriously trying to build SE traffic, put the content in one good place and make sure that there are links to it.

If you're getting text which is already shared by others, don't expect much. Sloppy seconds are just as cheap in SEO as they are in real life.

Thanks for the advice. I have a lot of stories for my members area but was just wondering if I could use some of them for a bit of SEO but it's probably not really worth the time.

robots.txt will keep google out and it will no longer be a concern . . .

sorry just re-read your reply . . . just use individual paragraphs of the stories on each site

That's why I get annoyed with the people who pretend to know. There ARE some serious SEO wizards on GFY, though. The shit Chio does with DUPLICATE content is nothing short of amazing.

lol - ya, you're right. That guy went a little over board there. The basic principles he touched on there and other talk about it out there is - change your shit around, cause Google will penalize.

In any case, the reason I say that G's algo for detecting dupe content is more sophisticated than most consider is not out of any respect for G' technology, but more from a rigorous first hand trial over 2 years and involving over 75,000 pages.

You can believe whichever orifice these words are coming out of (as in read my ass, or lips - your choice), but as far as I'm concerned even similar writing style without enough diversity in the content will get lumped as dupe.

But that's just my experience.

wow... even similar writing style??? that's pretty crazy.

and baddog... breaking it up, rewriting the parts and using them as teasers does seem like a good idea - and that's pretty much what I'm going to do.
