portable hard drive with 7200 rpm

ok so I'm looking for a portable hard drive (plug n' play) that has an RPM of 7200. So far I've only found ones that are 5400. Some guy from GeekSquad at BesyBuy told me such product doesn't exist but I suspect he had no idea what he was talking about.

Anyone knows?

Portable, you mean external drives? All my external firewire and/or USB hard disk drives are 7200 rpm, they are commonplace.

And Randy, don't waste your money at Best Buy. Drives and most every other computer item are way way cheaper online. Try NewEgg.com, TigerDirect.com Ebay.com or Pricewatch.com when you know exactly what you need.

yes of course, I have a portable hard drive 7200........ what I'm looking for now is an external hard drive with plug n' play capability (no need for a wall jack, powered by usb), with an rpm of 7200.

Most hard drives of this nature are 5400

Most? Sure, because 2.5" 7200 rpm drives are expensive compared to how little space they have on them. But they are common enough. 80GB will run about $130-$150, 100GB $150-$175, etc.

No need for a wall jack, LOL? You have to plug any external hard disk drive into a/c power, they are not going to run off the USB power at eithr 5400 rpm nor 7200 rpm. Maybe it is technically possible, I don't think so though. But that is silly even if it is possible. Unless you intend to sit in a field with a laptop and external hard drive with no access to power.

You should probably get 7200 rpm external fire wire or firewire/USB capable hard disk drives that plug into a/c power. They are commonplace now. And not that expensive for even as large as 500 Gb.

That's a negative. 2.5" drives do not require a/c power, they can be completely powered by their respective bus (USB/Firewire).

Welcome to 2007. Most portable harddrives (the type that's powered by the USB port) do run at 5400rpm. (I sold a couple hundred 160Gig Lacie portable harddisks this week, so I kinda know what i'm talking about )

You could try and build one yourself. Get a cheap Lacie, take out the hd and insert a 7200rpm laptop hd in the case... </experimental>

Or just buy the case and add the drive yourself. They cost $AUD11 (about $USD9) here

You guys are missing the point. Just because these drives exist now doesn't mean that they are more desirable. Especially for Randy who I suspect is going to do something more intensive than normal- HDV video editing for example. Why would you want to tax your computers USB capacity or worse, your computers overall power capacity like that. Are you really not going to be near a wall jack that can't power the hdd?
