No need for a wall jack, LOL? You have to plug any external hard disk drive into a/c power, they are not going to run off the USB power at eithr 5400 rpm nor 7200 rpm. Maybe it is technically possible, I don't think so though. But that is silly even if it is possible. Unless you intend to sit in a field with a laptop and external hard drive with no access to power.
You should probably get 7200 rpm external fire wire or firewire/USB capable hard disk drives that plug into a/c power. They are commonplace now. And not that expensive for even as large as 500 Gb.
