Granted, there are some people (or women) I really don't want to win. None of the likely candidates, democratic or republican, are Christian conservative (like bush) though, should be good for business.

I like him on economic issues, but on social issues he looks like a Neanderthal.

Brownback is a pretty crazy conservative guy, but he's recently left the far right for the less crazy Catholics, but you are right there are no real evangelicals in this race which might prove bad for the republicans. The election is still a long ways away, but the country is in the midst of a republican backlash and not having that strong base behind a candidate could make it next to impossible to win the white house.

I was looking at the likely candidates as; republican: Guiliani and McCain democrat: Hillary, Edwards, Obama and Gore if he decides to run. I could be wrong but I don't see anyone else winning unless there is a surprise candidate. That mormon could be very scary but I feel like a lot of America views mormons as not quite right in the head. I find it highly unlikely that he would win anything outside of Utah. In a recent poll, 33% said they would be less likely to vote for someone because they were mormon. By contrast, only 5% said the same thing about a black candidate. Despite who admits it, I think we all know the real number is bigger than 5% so I am sure that 33% is bigger as well.

I think no crazies is actually good for them. A lot of people are on the edge between democrat and reblublican (including myself because they both suck bad). Unless they just decide to sit it out, the religious crazies and pro-lifers are still going to vote republican if given the choice between a moderate and a democrat. I think the two Republican front runners are purposely being ambiguous about abortion for that reason. On the other hand they could pull a lot of democrat potential voters who don't want higher taxes or healthcare reform. Especially If Hillary wins the nomination, I think it could be a huge help to have a moderate republican.

It really does have a lot to do with who the democrat ends up being. There are a lot of hard christian right wingers that despise hilary and will just vote against her. That said, if it ends up being Obama or someone like that he might not motivate them to vote against him. The republicans can't just count on their votes either. They won't vote democrat, they just won't vote. We just saw this happen last November. The far right feels like they have been used. Bush promised them a lot of things and he has failed to deliver on almost all of those promises. Not to mention some of the people they helped put in power now have turned out to be gay/crooks/freaks. There was a great piece done about the christian right and how they basically turned their backs on the republicans this last November.

Guiliani has problems they will not like. He is pro-choice being the big one. He has said that he is personally pro life, but that he doesn't think abortion should be illegal. He also is for gun control and he cheated on his wife. McCain has slammed the christian right as zealots before so they won't get behind him and a moderate republican will have a hard time convincing them that he will do what they want.

Bush won over the christian right then lost them, it will be a pretty big challenge for the next candidate to bring them back. Hilary winning the nomination is probably the biggest step forward towards getting the christian right back that the republicans can hope for.
