The election is still a long ways away, but the country is in the midst of a republican backlash and not having that strong base behind a candidate could make it next to impossible to win the white house.

I think no crazies is actually good for them. A lot of people are on the edge between democrat and reblublican (including myself because they both suck bad). Unless they just decide to sit it out, the religious crazies and pro-lifers are still going to vote republican if given the choice between a moderate and a democrat. I think the two Republican front runners are purposely being ambiguous about abortion for that reason. On the other hand they could pull a lot of democrat potential voters who don't want higher taxes or healthcare reform. Especially If Hillary wins the nomination, I think it could be a huge help to have a moderate republican.
