Say a child is born deaf and blind.....what do they think about?

Was just watching Dr Phil (yeah yeah, shut up) and this lady had blind and deaf triplets, and it got me thinking....what do those kids think about?

they don't know words, they have never seen anything....what goes on in their brain?

I think they think about normal things, they might not know words but they can associate and feel different things.

It's weird how kids with disabilities learn to adapt to their environments.

ok, so they think about normal things, but what do they call those normal things

these kids are 7 or 8 years old, and all they do is rock back and forth when they are sitting there.....they know the carpet is fuzzy, but they don't know the word fuzzy, i wonder if they have their own language they have made up in their head?

I am referring to kids, not grown adults.....once people grow more they become more "normal" because they are used to the surroundings, but when you are 5-8 and a little older it is all so new

A part of me really wants to try that, ( or as best as I can replicate from my fully cognitive state ), for a better understanding of it.

Yeup - wow, mind blowing thing in many ways.

I may be way off here, but dont they try and communicate with them via touch? Im sure i saw a show about that quite a few years ago.

And if they are deaf and blind, they wouldnt be sad about the situation or feel like they miss anything as they wouldnt know any better

well, the kids I just saw on the tv didn't look all that great, they were constantly shitting themselves, running into tables and hitting their heads pretty hard, they constantly fell and hurt themselves

I know they wouldn't know any better, but I am pretty sure constantly doing the things I mentioned above can't make you feel well whether you know it is wrong or not

Wouldn't be so bad, because you wouldn't know the alternative. You wouldn't be able to understand "vision" or "hearing". They are things that you have to experience first hand to understand.

btw, stop using Helen Keller as an example, she was not born blind and deaf

i don't care what people say, but even a baby at 12 months old has images and sounds that shape them into youth

being deaf AND blind straight out of the womb is just a crazy thing to think about

I agree, and I wasn't asking how bad it would be, I am just wondering what you would think about if you never knew words or had never seen anything...do you make up new objects in your mind?

I guess maybe you could form objects in your mind based on the shapes you feel

my guess would be they could enjoy very loud music from the vibrations. would love dinner time because im sure they could smell it from a mile away and they would still enjoy the taste of good food. their world would probably be a map of their house in their mind in the form of shapes, table tops, toilets, sinks, beds, couches, etc.. they might like a hot shower. to me it seems they could enjoy a lot of things.

definately wouldn't be anything close to a normal life because the world around them has been developed over thousands of years from people and animals with 5 senses not 3.

your senses are developed as needed... not by default. in other words, if you were born in darkness with no light, you would not have developed a sense of sight. kids like this would no doubt develop a hypersensitive sense of feeling (touching, vibrations etc) to sense their environment, just like an adorable little 3 member termite colony.

It's even worse with dogs - my 14 year barks at inanimate objects and sleeps through EVERYTHING.

Granted, all 4 are horrible watch dogs. I came home from the grocery today and my painter, who was supposed to be here tomorrow, had come in through 3 different doors to unloaded all his stuff, put the paint cans in the right rooms, and was playing with the dogs while drinking a beer

Depends on who they are! Heck, one of them was my painter today for the colors I picked: "Are you really sure about these?? I'm going to have to come back and paint everything off-white when you decide to sell".

It will kinda look like the Easter Bunny threw up. A deaf and blind child would like it though.

I really think they do because my kids are almost 2 and almost 3 and they are both boys who play together all the time.

I'm pretty sure they "talk" to each other in their own language. It's weird ...they fully communicate to each other and understand.

Personally, I think it sounds like Chinese.

they don't think about normal things that's for sure. they build associations based on touch, taste, and smell. i doubt they have the internal chatter we have. or maybe they do but in a different form. if they do it would probably be more thinking of physical feelings. when most of us think of something it usually involves an internal visualization and internal monologue. i can't help but think if your primary sensory input was that of physical touch, that is what you would think of. not what they're touching or what it means, but the actual feeling it provides and if it lead to stimulation of taste and smell.

someone born deaf and blind really has no chance of ever understanding the world we do. and honestly we never have a chance of understanding the world the way they do. they just can't make the associations the way we do, and we're unable to make associations the way they do because of the extra sensory input we use in making decisions.
