It's even worse with dogs - my 14 year barks at inanimate objects and sleeps through EVERYTHING.
Granted, all 4 are horrible watch dogs. I came home from the grocery today and my painter, who was supposed to be here tomorrow, had come in through 3 different doors to unloaded all his stuff, put the paint cans in the right rooms, and was playing with the dogs while drinking a beer
