I have had only contempt and distrust for George Bush since long before 9/11. And since nothing is impossible, it has to be possible that those plane hi-jackings were either an inside job or at least facilitated. Pearl Harbor provides a potential precedent both for near wilful unpreparedness and for Washington having information which - by accident or design - was withheld from the people who could have used it.

But if only because I do not want to believe that any US president would stoop so low, I do not believe 9/11 itself was part of a government or neocon conspiracy. What I do believe is that reactions to the events of that day have been cynically manipulated ever since, to allow the White House to pursue policies which would have had little or no support otherwise.

There are simply too many inconsistencies and coincidences, beginning with the near immediate announcement of who was the mastermind behind the attacks. That April we had finally admitted defeat in attempting to negotiate with the Taliban about an oil pipeline through Afghanistan. In the summer we began troop build-ups in the Mediterranean ahead of an attack on Afghanistan. How obliging was it for someone supposedly hidden out in that very country, to attack us first?

Because the point is that without 9/11 most Americans would never have heard of Afghanistan or Al Qaida. Certainly both had made the news before, but not the kind of news to which the majority of Americans pay any attention or care about. And in more rational times, we would surely have questioned the reasonableness of invading a country because its administration were no more capable of dislodging an unsavory character than the Russians had been. 5+ years later, we have fared no better and yet our troops are still there with hardly anyone asking why.

The Patriot Act was the same. Already drafted years earlier, it was quickly pushed into law on a tide of emotion, voted on without being read. This act has far more potential to restrict our own civil liberties than it has to protect us against terrorism and in other circumstances it would have been a political liability.

And so on. Almost every aspect of George Bush's foreign policy has been sold to the American public by beating the 9/11 drum. That goes for much of his domestic program as well: 9/11 has frequently been used to distract from its many flaws.

Yet 5½ years on, the man allegedly behind 9/11 is still at large and many would argue it has never been proved that Bin Laden was in fact responsible. Our troops are embroiled, for the most spurious of reasons, in two foreign countries with a death toll that even on our side is now in the same ball park as the number killed in the World Trade Center. Tens of thousands of people who in no shape or form had anything whatever to do with the events of that day are dead or have had their lives ruined. And no end is in sight.

Whatever the truth of 9/11, this has not been a glorious chapter in US history.

I have been expressing my opinions for 40-odd years. I have even been paid for them. I couldn't care less whether I'm a lone voice, or if I'm saying the same thing as millions of others. A lot of the time I have more questions than answers and I'm not greatly concerned whether or not I am proved to be right. im no very little about planes, but im sure the process into flying one plane is very similar to flying another aircraft.

like the switch over from car to lorry. lorry has more controls, but one off the basics are still very much there. you can still do the basics.

remember these pilots also planned for this for i think 2 years. they had aircraft lessons. and do you think during those 2 years they didnt pull out a book on how to fly the big airliners, or something similar. they would have been doing mountains of research.

Im sure that once the pilot learnt to fly a plane, learning the step up to a bigger plane just for a one of flight would be very possible indeed.

There was a lot of bad reporting that morning. Things were hetic and confusing.

I remember that once the FAA ordered all planes across the country to land, there was four more planes they were "unable to reach". CNN reported it for nearly an hour, if only on their little ticker scrolling the screen. I'm really surprised no one else has ever mentioned this.

You can look back in US history at almost every major event that has occured and you will find a conspiracy looming somewhere. At the end of the day,the people in power will do what they think is best..hopefully it coincides with the needs of the majority. I know that overall, I live better today than I did in the 70's,80's and 90's and so do a large majority.
