:mad This is why I hate wires

I send wire.
Recipient asks after a couple of days where it is.
I reply with proof of sending it.
After a week or two we conclude it's not going to arrive.
I ask my bank to trace it.
Today they reply and say it was received at the other end.

Unless the recipient has made an honest mistake I've probably lost my money, and the only thing left to do is call them out. They're a big company.....

Yeah some people swear by wires but I've had some headaches with them too. Especially currency to currency wires arriving with the proper amount.

But I've dealt with your situation as well. Pain in the ass. Hope it gets sorted.

I guess if you can provide evidence from your bank that it arrived then you are in a stronger position then they are.

Even better would be something in writing from their own bank. I don't know if repeating the details - that I had submitted - such as the company name and account # would be a violation of Canada's pretty strict privacy laws though.

I've provided the company with the date it was credited and asked them to double check everything. Hopefully, it is just an oversight.

The funny thing is that I expressed concerns to the company about wires before agreeing to send, because they are basically like cash and offer no consumer protection in the event of being fucked. How ironic.

The bank can trace whether it has been received/withdrawn by the recipient.

Uh yeah, re-read the first msg. I have confirmation that it has been received, but the recipient denies it.

My bank has a 5-day wire reversal in case things go titsup.... ask your bank manager if it's possible. It costs me 50 euros to reverse, but is worth it.

It's been well over that now because of the holidays...

My bank charged me $AUD20 (about $USD16) just to send an email to the other bank asking if the funds had arrived.

Wires have always scared me. Although I don't have a horror story, there have been many problems with timing and things of that matter. I tend to stay away from those things, I find it easier to have a couple bank accounts with international banks, and transfer funds in that manner.

sometimes the wires are rcvd by the bank and not credited into the account. your bank may have not really made contact (sometimes they just look at their record of the money sending correctly and say 'they got it')

the recieving bank can show proof of the money being recieved and credited to the account you specified. wires DO leave a paper trail.

it sounds like you have proof from your bank that the money was deposited, get proof from their bank.

on country to country wires sometimes the $$ goes to a 'holding' bank before the transfer to the destination bank . . this was the case for a wire from canada to us . . had to go to a federal reserve bank before the $$ could be placed in my account . . no big deal there are records of all transactions

Yeah, not in this case though, my bank have explicitly said that the funds are in the recipients account.

If your banks says it is in their account, then you need to go to that person, tell them the situation. Tell them to discuss it with their bank, because you have proof.

You should ask Westpac to give you written proof that the funds have left Westpac in New York and received by the final receiving bank account.

As Wanton mentioned, most international wires go through a corresponding bank in North America. Contact your bank manager, tell him that the receiver claims the funds are not in his account and unless he provides proof on paper or affidavit that the funds have left your bank account, went to Westpac New York, then either to the Corresponding bank for the Canadian bank or the Canadian bank directly, that you will have to ask them to call back the funds or they will have to return the funds to you.

From experience, WestPac Australia workers tend to just check their screen and say 'yup, the funds were received' or 'nope, we didn't get anything'. In reality, they aren't tracing anything, they are just confirming the way the transaction was written out and confirming the funds left the WestPac Australia system. Demand that they trace it and demand that they get a confirmation from the final receiving bank that the funds are in the proper account and to the credit of : XXXX Inc. (whatever the company is). Also, tell them you already paid for a confirmation but it's still not there so you're not paying a penny more.

I hope you get it settled quick.

All settled. The rep from the company checked their banking records and has confirmed the funds made it. I didn't think I was going to be ripped off by them, but I was concerned that the funds had dropped into a black hole somewhere.

The silly thing is that I was communicating with this company about a potential lost wire - sending screen captures of the details I entered to make sure everything was correct - but this was 5 days AFTER the funds were credited into their account!

Oh well... it's cost me $AUD20 to trace plus $USD35 in receiving bank fees... lesson learnt

A general tip is to include the branch bank info as well. Can save you from a lot of trouble.

btw, DieselAction is doing FREE wires (domestic/intl) with min of only $500. (+ free cheques, free epassporte payments)

who else does that ?

Wires are the safest way possible to transfer money. That money CAN'T dissapear. Period. If it stalls somewhere however, you have more then enough ways to trace that money. Those that give you the trouble, fucked up somewhere and hope that you'll give up on it.
