DRM, good or bad?

I hear more and more about DRM, protection of the content, bringing back your "lost" customers and more thing assosiated with DRM. What you guys think on it? Anyone here using it on their sites? Can you really feel the difference after implementation?

I'll give you a soft b-mp. Haven't heard of it. "bringing back your "lost" customers" and "protection of the content"? Fishy at best. What's the site?

Actually I wrote my joke in the same time as you wrote you first reply, so it wasnt directed to you. Now regarding "bringing back your "lost" customers" and "protection of the content" those are my thought on what DRM can do, not a sales pitch from any site.

I think it depends on your content. If you have truely unique content it is well worth to add DRM to it.
If you only have standard porn, people will go somewhere else if you add DRM to it.

DRM sucks big time! Just annoying for your customers and if someone wants to share your stuff he can just remove the drm anyway. So its a waste of time.

Remove DRM? How it can be done? I heard actually that its strong algorithm, that hard to break.

No DRM is really that strong. It can help stop "casual piracy", but anyone who puts their mind to it, will be able to do what they wish with your content. If you need to use DRM, it needs to be problem free and transparent to the consumer.

I think we will see a real backlash against it from consumers eventually. After they, say try to copy their iTunes songs that theyve spent hundreds and maybe thousands of dollars on, to their new computer after having gone over their machine limits and things like that. Its kind of a timebomb waiting to happen. At that time I think you'll see a huge demand for DRM free content.

Hell HD-DVD encryption has already been cracked, and BLU-RAY isnt far off, if they havnt already. iTunes DRM has been cracked etc.

drm is a pain in the ass, for webmasters, members, and crooks who want to steal your content. drm has been cracked for quite some time, it does not stop anyone who is really motivated.

I believe most of our members are not "really motivated", otherwise they been looking and finding all the free porn that available around, instead of joining LB-69.

no one cares if drm has been cracked. 99% of your customers won't have a clue.

it's expensive still and turns off some surfers. I am sure eventually it will be standard but it still needs some work.

Its true, just did some research, the soft that cracks DRM wont let you do it if you dont have the licence for the file in the first place. I cant see my members sitting and cracking the files and releasing it to P2P networks..anyway, still waiting for someone here with first hand experience on that technology.

DRM is a growing problem for all users..so, yeah, if the content is unique that DRM is worthwhile to be set up.

I used it, then Oystein and what's his face had the "falling out", and the company went away, had to replace all my DRM movies with the Origs.

Was a pain in the ass to do it, only worth it if you're doing Pay Per View if you ask me.

As is movies with no DRM you get members not being able to figure out that their 486 computer with some out of date media player wont play any movies worth anything.

For my pay per view I do 4.95 per clip , I tried per minute I tried higher lower that what works then again other might have luck with other pricing (my ppv site is www.Easyppv.com)

So for PPV I do a 72 hour access for 4.95 and use DRM, only support WMV

yeah, stick DRM on your content and watch surfers bitch and moan your vids won't play, and the ones that can play it will still share it, so you end up with a net gain of almost nothing for going through all that trouble.

The concept is good
The actual use and issues associated with it bad

well drm has some good use but can be a pain in the ass for both users and webmasters..

if you are in a small niche and have some good content it might be worth the hassle though.. as keeping your movies protected from easily being shared can boost your earnings.. the real fans of the niche will stay longer since they cant view the movies after their membership has expired etc.. if that choose to set it up like that, that is..

i know of a company in a small niche that have boosted their earnings by 20% over the last year by using DRM as a protection of their movies.. Eventhoug they lost their mac users, which was just a small % of their users and some of their customers canceled due to problems with DRM etc, they still experienced an overall retention increase and better earnings..

so if you want more info and is looking for a good DRM provider that will help you get started with the project on the right foot you should contact Leon at mediakey.com - he will help you get the project off the ground and make sure that you find the solution and options that is best for your business model etc..

oh, and before anyone acuse me of spamming, i dont work for him but have worked with him on some of our projects and i have never been unhappy about the service mediakey provides..
