The BIG difference today is the way most pop and rock songs are marketed. Back in the 50/60/70s the way to get it sold was via the radio. The song had to be good to get it played, or popular at that moment.

Today it's about the videos on MTV. Yes the pop videos of today are some of the ever, the songs are not.

Add to this the way bands rose in the early days and the way they rise now and you can see why the MUSIC of today is of a lower quality than it was in the 60s. The Beatles had been playing in clubs and pubs for years before they made. Today a band is over and gone in the time it used to take for them to learn their trade. Writing, singing and performing music.
The biggest difference today is the money men control the business, you are not allowed to get stars so big they are in control. Back in the early days the marketing men had no clue, so the bands developed. Today they are in, up and gone in less time than some took learn.

Funny story about LZ. On their day they were amazing, high as kites they sometime floated off in different directions. Saw them in the 70s when they started to play the next number in the show.

The problem was they all started to play a different song, then tried to change to the other guys song. A kind of musical train wreck.

Well folks there are some interesting comments and points of view in all the posts here but if you notice something there are only a handful of what anyone here considers "Great Bands" that have come out in the last 10 years.

OLD SCHOOL
led zeppelin
pink floyd
black sabbath
queen
rush
deep purple
the who
eagles
beatles
police
cream
jethro tull
elvis
scorpions
bob dylan
nazareth

MIDDLE AGE
metallica
rage against the machine
guns n roses
queens of the stone age
beck
system of a down
radiohead
kid rock
cold play
red hot chilli peppers
foo fighters
godsmack
audioslave
tool

NEW?
velvet underground
marilyn manson
slipknot
deftones
dropkick
murphys
the horrors
yeah yeah yeahs
wolfmother
nick cave
leaf hound

I think Paul Markam summed it up pretty succinctly...

"Today a band is over and gone in the time it used to take for them to learn their trade. Writing, singing and performing music."

"The biggest difference today is the money men control the business, you are not allowed to get stars so big they are in control. Back in the early days the marketing men had no clue, so the bands developed. Today they are in, up and gone in less time than some took learn."

There seems to be an interesting parallel between the music industry and the adult industry these days. Those that take the Time to Learn and Cultivate their trade will have the best chance to develop a successful long term business while those that rely on the Hype will realize once the hype is gone then so is the business. Hmmm
