Well, I can't remember the last time that Google was down, and Youtube is down at least once a week. I bet that will change.

Google will be able to implement keyword rich advertising and capitalize on the market...

I see them going TV style like yahoo and adding like 10-30 secs spots before each video.

Huge step in the battle for control of the internet. If the deal goes through, Google will pretty much own the user-uploaded video market (Google Video + Youtube have a combined market share of over 70%). That gives them some major power in the online content business, and it also signifies a large switch in Google's strategy. In the past, they primarily focused on developing things themselves and acquiring small, developing projects. Buying part of AOL already signalled they were deviating from that strategy, and if they indeed buy Youtube, it's clear that they are taking a much more aggressive stance in the markets.

That's a major blow to both Yahoo and Microsoft, who are both in direct competition with Google. It makes the sale of Facebook to Yahoo much more likely, and also improves chances of MS and Yahoo strengthening their alliance.

Keyword rich advertising, definitely, although promotion of movies and such will probably play just as large a role, if not a larger one. It opens up the possibility for an alliance between Google and Newscorp, with Newscorp using Google's video power and Google using Newscorp's social networking power (one of the areas in which Google, with orkut, is still weaker than Yahoo and MS). The one problem would be the bad reputation Newscorp has among a number of techie idealists... working with Murdoch would really screw with the "Don't be evil" slogan.

I don't think Google will go for tv-style advertising clips, though. That might make the thing less popular, and right now I think they are mainly aiming to consolidate their position.

I just read a big article about Youtube and the owners of the site think putting commercials in front of each video would be suicide. They think what brings people to the site is the freewheeling "community" nature of the site and if they add a 20 second commercial to a 40 second video people will stop coming in there.

They have been doing some experiments with banners and they even are having companies make funny commercials and they put them on the site. There was an AMX commercial that got 500,000 views. So I would think, if they were smart, they would do more of that and try to find new ways to make revenue from the videos.

Then again if I created the site and google just handed me 1.6 billion, I wouldn't give two shits about what they did with it.

thats an interesting marketing strategy and i would assume something like that would work. i love how the net is blowing traditional marketing away.

you figure the next thing is these big companies are going to be paying people like the CKY Crew/Dickhouse (Jackass, Jackass II, etc.) to wear their shirts and do stupid stuff just to throw it up on YouTube for advertising.

great idea

There is no way in hell google is going to add pre-roll advertising on youtube. I heard Google was doing some tests with post-roll ads on google video, but stopped that as well. I'd say Google would end up doing something like revver. Static, no sound link/image at the end of the video. Can't see how that would annoy anyone. Perhaps as it teams up with networks for big shows, etc they would also include some midstream adverts like regular tv, etc though. But they won't allow it for the majority of people.

If any company is going to figure out how to monetize youtube, it's going to be Google.

they could easily sell ad spots to movie companies and all of that.. Placing short ads before the video starts playing. They would make some good $ with that I think. So ya, I could see comercials before the videos.

The Google/YouTube may never happen. 50% chancce I would say. And let's not forget Murdoch is in there as well.

YouTube wants deep in it's heart an IPO (est. 2 bil value), but with the copyrighted materials on there now that may be on the high side. That is the reason they have been cracking the whip on it - to make them worth more should an IPO happen and clear any dark clouds.

It makes sense for google to take it over.

1. Comapnies that may sue You Tube may think twice about suing google. They don't back down from lawsuits.

2. Google can give YouTube what it sorely needs - Cheaper bandwith.

3. The search engine on You Tube is horrible compare to what google could bring to the table.

4. Google would love another outlet for adsense. Let's face it, that money is golden.

Will it happen? Maybe...

BTW, The yahoo/facebook merger talks have kinda slowed down. The fact is these companies know what they are really worth. With myspace growing to become the #1 destination on the net (bought at 500+ mil I believe), these companies are actually cheap.

Don't hold your breath for an announcement anytime soon, though google is a good investment right now...

Never, ever, ever. Part of the whole YouTube craze is its EASY! Fast! That is what flash streaming is all about.

Surfers will drop like bird shit once ads are placed before vids...

Think of YouTube as what Napster was before they became legit. Now look at the whole Napster model. It's a technology for sharing videos...

Who will feel the pain in this? Apple and the ipod video downloads. Wait and see....

I disagree that they would put commercials before every clip. That is suicide. There are a number of sites that do that, and they have all lost market share because of it. If there is an alternative to commercials, and I'm sure there is, then Google will do it -- and I'm sure they have already figured it out.

From a user standpoint, I think you'll see the videos being degraded in quality far less than what YouTube currently does.

Matt,

Google wants it for the tecnology. It's the same technology as Napster had and look how that evolved into the whole legit dl music model.

The quality will not decrease. That will be suicide as well. Just as ads before vids.

My two guesses

1. Google uses as a platform for premium downloaded content. While you are surfing the free vids, why not grab a copy of your fav tv show "for the road".

2. Google creates a myspace/youtube clone. Combine the two. The youtube traffic is there.

Remeber what google pays for bandwith and what youtube does are two different things.

I still think you wont see this deal happen.
