They have been doing some experiments with banners and they even are having companies make funny commercials and they put them on the site. There was an AMX commercial that got 500,000 views. So I would think, if they were smart, they would do more of that and try to find new ways to make revenue from the videos.
Then again if I created the site and google just handed me 1.6 billion, I wouldn't give two shits about what they did with it.

There is no way in hell google is going to add pre-roll advertising on youtube. I heard Google was doing some tests with post-roll ads on google video, but stopped that as well. I'd say Google would end up doing something like revver. Static, no sound link/image at the end of the video. Can't see how that would annoy anyone. Perhaps as it teams up with networks for big shows, etc they would also include some midstream adverts like regular tv, etc though. But they won't allow it for the majority of people.
