Starbucks Raising Prices??!!!

Starbucks seems to be raising prices again after 2 years. Sure, it may be a few cents, but change adds up after a while. We'll probably be paying $8 for a cup of coffee in a few years from now, how ridiculous does that sound.

You do know there's other places to purchase coffee right? Starbucks raises prices because people with pay them. It's more than coffee, it's a brand and a lifestyle. I would love to be in that position with any of my brands.

Good for them.

Last time I went to a starbucks, it was to use the free $10 gift card I was sent for buying some shit from Kentrox. I, and a coworker had a coffee, and gave the remaining $2.xx to the barista as a tip.

Think that was '04.

The thing is, if people were smart about purchases, we may be out of business, lol. So sure people will pay who are hooked on the lifestyle or mystique or whatever it is. I'm sure my coffee tastes like muddy water to someone used to a coffee shops coffee, but hell it works for me so I'm "saving" hundreds of dollars a week I guess.

you are smarter than most ppl!.. and strong too - to resist the temptation ;-) .. another thing is that if you are working from home, you are less likely to go out for coffee every day and will probably learn to make good coffee at home

i may go once every 3 months, one of my girls works at the hospital and gets bogo free cards - im not there frequently enough to remember what its called, but she likes the frozen thingy with the whipped cream - not coffee as far as im concerned.

rather make my own espresso at home for 10 cents - it just makes the house smell so damn good

I dunno, I bought a venti dark roast yesterday... $2.39 canadian (about $2 US) which is pretty much in line on a per ounce basis with Tim Hortons, and I can tell you that the starbucks coffee is a much better coffee.

For comparision, an extra large timmy's here is $1.69, but the starbucks cup is somewhat larger, so it would cost around $2 for the same amount at TH.

PR_Tom: Here's the deal. I live alone, I want to have a couple of cups of coffee a day, and I really enjoy coffee. Making coffee at home for myself alone means I either (1) drink way too much because it is available or (2) make two pots a day and drink one cup out of each. I own a pretty darn good coffee machine too. Either of those choices is going to cost me more than the $4 or so a day I dump on coffee now, plus the hassle of getting decent coffee beans (speciality store, not folgers, thanks), making sure the cream is fresh, and the time and effort required to make the coffee, clean up after, and maintain the equipment properly... it isn't lifestyle, it's logic at a point.

The better choice is to have none at all, but since I have look since been addicted to coffee, kicking the habit isn't an easy option anymore. If I don't have coffee by about 4 or 5 in the afternoon I have a pretty evil headache.

I totally agree, people will pay premium to be a part of that brand just because it sets the standard. Main reason why I'm bitching is cause its the closest coffee shop by the office.

See? Whatever works for you. My cheap ass pre-processed "crap" coffee is what I grew up on, and what I still like. Pennies per mug too.
The amount of coffee I drink would run me probably $40 a day if I bought expensive beans or whatever. Forget it! lol. I'd rather buy groceries for a week.

A lot of you are full of shit with your assumptions.

I drink a majority of my coffee at home. When I do go out for coffee I probably go to Starbucks 95% of the time. Why??? Because I like their coffee better then anyone elses. I know that no matter what city I'm in, Starbucks will have consistency and I can be assured that I will get a decent drink no matter where I'm at.

It may be expensive, some may argue it's overpriced. I do not see much difference in the pricing of any coffee shop or stand for a similar product. You can't compare the price of a cup of regular black coffee to a latte or mocha at Starbucks.

Will I notice a 5 cent price increase? Nope...

All of you that feel proud you have never stepped into a Starbucks... that's fucking amazing. Good for you. Who gives a shit? It doesn't make you any better then anyone else and people that enjoy Starbucks coffee don't feel they are better then anyone else.

The truth is we don't need to drink coffee, it's a luxury in my opinion. What a company charges is completely up to them and the people who are willing to pay it. If Starbucks raised their prices above a limit I felt uncomfortable paying, I would not go there. It's a choice.

Rich, I have looked at a nubmer of single cup coffee makers. In every case, the end product coffee isn't all that good, because of the way in which it is made. The only system I have found for making reasonable coffee in smaller batches in small percolator type deals, even then, you have to make 3 - 4 cups to truly get decent taste. At lower amounts of coffee and water, especially on small drip systems, you often cannot get the coffee up to a high enough temperature before the water runs out, leaving you with strong but often very bitter coffee.

I agree with you, abadfish. And I'm only proud because you know, it *is* a luxury, and just like my other entertainment expenses, I have a hard time justifying them.
It's amazing how you see these people on talk shows, and shows like "big spender" who got into debt in college and at 20 something years old, just making minimum payments, they'll be paying off debt until they're 80. BUT, try to get them to stop shopping, or stop going out to dinner, or stop going to starbucks, or turn off their cell phones and cable and they just DIE, lmao!!

So I'm from the old mindset and it works for me, so allow me my little pride if it's all the same ;)

Haha, you just described my sister. She's a single mom who is a teacher working on her masters... She has done very well for herself. I'm proud of her. But at the same time she has a brand new car and is always late on her bills. She makes pretty good money. Spends a lot of money eating out, on coffee, clothes, etc... A lot of things she doesn't need. I'm saying, with what she makes, she shouldn't have any problem paying her bills and living comfortably. So I have no sympathy for her problems. She brings it on herself. I lived with her for a short time and didn't pay rent, but I actually have more spending money now that I moved into my new apt and pay over $500 a month on rent plus utilities. Crazy eh?

lol yep. Moving out on your own and paying everything 100% alone usually gives you a good appreciation for the value of the dollar like nothing else will.

I hate having debt, and spending too much.. On the other hand I dont shop at bargain places, or use coupons. But I'd rather drive past a restaurant and go to a grocery store, lol. I dunno, whatever works I guess!

Good for them.

They have created a brand, a life style, haters, loyalists, and most importantly a market. Hell they created a whole new industry.

They took a risk, went head first into coffee when it was on a national usage decline and got people to not only want their product, they got them to pay 300 to 500+% more for it than ever before.

I am more of a Dutch Bros. person myself. I think it is just a northern CA, Oregon thing.
