When will Colleges give athletes some ability to generate income? Reggie Bush Story.

These kids make the schools HUGE money. Why not let them get paid some how? It seems only fair to me.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?s...yhoo&type=lgns

Maybe I am wrong, but it seems like in this day and age of big college ball there should be some incentives other than a scholarship and the possibility of turning pro.

They do, they give athletes the facilities to shine bright enough for them to be drafted to the pros and give em an education to boot!

You just gave the answer....There is no possibility of "turning" pro once you accept money for playing.. You ARE pro once you see that first dollar. I used to be a Division 1 athlete, and the restrictions are crazy...No accepting rides from people, using school phones, etc. They could be lightened up a bit, but money should never be received, or else you aren't a true amateur athlete.

its sad, bit the schools are just as much to blame then the athletes themselves...

I thought college athletes need to maintain a certain grade in order for them to continue their sporting activities. Are all schools uphold the same policy?

I think they have to get at least a 2.0 average

you are 100% wrong.

90% of the people who play college ball know they have no shot of making it to the pros. They play cause they love to play. The school uses a lot of the money on acedemics, new buildings, etc.. It's not like 1 individual is profiting off of it. The school is better because of it which all the students benefit from. If the player is that good his payday will come soon enough.

The last thing that college needs is to have paid players. I like college so much better then NFL, NFL it all about the money, College there is no egos, etc. It's because they love to play. period.

BTW Reggie Bush got like a 50million dollar contract plus millions of endorsements, I don't think he minded playing for free for a few years in college.

I think you have some good point there even if they say that these coaches are already professionals and that they expect legitimate salary.

You guys are off about the coaches as well.

A good coach benefits the players who are " playing for free" more then anything. Think about it, if they paid coaches 50K a year, what type of coach do you think they would get, one that would not give a shit and the players would learn nothing from them. All of these great players are not born with NFL skills, they have talent but it is shaped and developed by talented people (coaches). Some players go to certain schools because of the coach. Some of these coaches have NFL experience.

SO if nothing else a great coach is a payback in education to that player is doing it " for free".

I have no problem with coaches making great salaries. Great coach gets the team to a BCS bowl, he more then makes his salary just from that one game. Bad coach bad season, empty stands, little ticket sales. Great coach, great season, lots of ticket sales, merchandise sales, lots of money for the university, benefits the students... Better players, Player's draft stock goes up, player makes more money in NFL.

I agree that there should be some sort of pay for college athletes, for example a percentage of the revenue the school makes from the sport divided evenly (as the pros do for players in the play-offs).

More kids have their athletic careers terminated early due to sports injury than actually make it into the pro sports ranks.

Also, if a player is injured and can't continue their sport, then they should be allowed to complete their education on scholarship if they choose to (and that type of scholarship should not count against the colleges allotment of active player scholarships). As things stand now, they often get an unceremonious boot.

Sports are a fun and integral part of college life. It is also a big business. The student athletes play a major part in filling the seats and generating revenue. They deserve a share of the pie.
