For all those saying Steve Irwin was "asking for it"

it wouldnt be gfy without yet another steve irwin thread today and as a fellow aussie im gonan get my 2 cents in..

i see a lot of people saying he was asking for it .. and maybe he was on a lot of occasions.. but this time was different

according to reports he swam over the stingray - now I know many people here are divers and have swam near these .. they are usaully very passive ceratures.

what happened was a FREAK accident.... i repeat FREAK ACCIDENT

NOT like wrestling a croc or lion or anythign else like steve did.

this could have happened to anyone of THOUSANDS of peope who go scuba diving of the coast every year... i guess they are asking for it to huh?

NOW here comes the good part:

lets take a look at the statistics of leading causes of death for peopel aged 24-45

Causes of Death Number of Deaths Rate per 100,000
25-44 years All causes 148,904 177.8
1 Accidents and adverse effects 26,554 31.7
. . . Motor vehicle accidents 14,528 17.3
. . . All other accidents and adverse effects 12,026 14.4
2 Human immunodeficiency virus infection 22,795 27.2
3 Malignant neoplasms, including neoplasms of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues 22,147 26.4
4 Diseases of heart 16,261 19.4
5 Suicide 12,536 15
6 Homicide and legal intervention 9,261 11.1
7 Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis 4,230 5.1
8 Cerebrovascular diseases 3,418 4.1
9 Diabetes mellitus 2,520 3
10 Pneumonia and influenza 1,972 2.4
. . . All other causes (Residual) 27,210 32.5

LEASING CAUSE BY FAR: CAR ACCIDENT

so if any of you guys blabbing on about steve "askign for it" get killed in a car accident - remind me to post here and say that YOU were asking for it - because ive alreeady warned you - you've seen the stats.. you know better

just remember next time you get in your car... you're asking for it!!!

now.. go fuck yourselves

I didn't know that Steve was 24 years old?

I'm sure a lot of 24-25 year old's are speeding, driving while drunk, on the phone (without headset) or whatever, which indeed could lead to the harsh conclusion that they are also "asking for it", meaning they take an unnecessary risk. Bare in mind, "asking for it" is far from the same as "deserving it". I don't think anyone deserves to die. I'm sure people mean "it was expected" or "it didn't come as a surprise".

I get your point, but the numbers are really not that useful unless you compare the amount of people getting into a car and dying from it, with the amount of people wrestling a crocodile (or teasing a stingray) and dying from it.

Sure, it's a shame that he died and it's a shame that his family will suffer. But I didn't know him in person and I didn't watch his shows, so it's not really going to affect me in any way. Therefore my leftover sympathy will go to all the other people on this planet, who are much worse off than he was. They die everyday without "asking for it".

But the age thing was only really a very small part of my point/post. If you have any serious comments for the rest, I'd be glad to hear from you again.

We all love and admire Steve Irwin's work.

His zest for life and nature was real and infectious. He was Australian but also an international star. And his accent, who could forget it?

Yes, it was an accident, but it is really not any different than wrestling a croc or taking close-up photos of a spitting cobra.

The stingray is a WILD animal, just like all the others.

It is no coincidence that the segment of the film he was shooting at the time was called "Ocean's Deadliest."

No disrespect to Steve. Everyone who loves nature loved Steve. He was a great man, and the world grieves.

But, to say that he didn't die from one (in this particular case, remote) risk of close proximity to a wild animal that went awry, would not be accurate, in my view.

Those stats would actually mean something if the number of people driving around in cars were out wrestling crocs or swimming over stingrays.

I am pretty sure the ratios would go up substantially if all things were equal.

Amazing man, good people always die young.

anyone who says he was asking for it is an idiot.

he put his life on the line to spread education of animals to millions of people, anyone pushing for conservation is a hero imo.

I dive. The odds of you getting killed by one of those is pretty damn low. They are not aggressive creatures.

Steve died doing what he loved to do. That is a nobel death.

I have nothing bad to say about the guy. He amused me for hours on end with his show. He was a wonderful man, a leading conservationist, a funny guy, a good husband and an incredible father. Many men could learn a few lessons from the way he lived his life. May he rest in peace.

I don't understand how anybody could really say anything bad about the guy. I've done just a little reading and it sounds like he's really done a lot for animals. I mean really, who doesn't know who he is and what he does?

Very enthusiastic guy that wanted to teach kids and adults alike all about animals. How could anybody possibly say that he was "asking for it" just because he went into the wild to work with animals? Thats what researchers do, for the animals own good.

remember that he died during filming of a documentary. therefore, his death is on film. according to those who saw the film and were present the ray was under the sand invisible. as steve swam over the ray it's tail went up and sunk into his heart or aeorta (sp?). after steve pulled out the barb he full unconcious. that is when it is believed he died. this lasted less than one minute and is on film.

thats what makes this extremly freak and rare.

keep in mind that people who WANT to kill someone with a knife are not often this lucky.

hell yeh, this is just stupid. He wasnt asking for it for fuck sake of course he wasnt.

even when he was wrestling with aligators he wasnt asking for it! He was helping them and doing it proffesionaly instead of sticking needles in them. He could cope, he knew animals reactions.

In this stingray situation though, he would have had very little idea, possibly none of what would happen.

I think its 17 deatths around the world since 1996 have happend like this.... 17!!! more than 17 die in cars every hour!
and onily 6 people have died like that in australia.

in a way he has died as a martyr in what he believes in

It's fucked up still, if he had died to a croc I don't think it would have gotten 1/10 attention but to go out by a sting ray? Bam.

i see a lot of people saying he was asking for it .. and maybe he was on a lot of occasions.. but this time was different

according to reports he swam over the stingray - now I know many people here are divers and have swam near these .. they are usaully very passive ceratures.

what happened was a FREAK accident.... i repeat FREAK ACCIDENT

25-44 years All causes 148,904 177.8

. . . Motor vehicle accidents 14,528 17.3
. . . All other accidents and adverse effects 12,026 14.4
2 Human immunodeficiency virus infection 22,795 27.2
3 Malignant neoplasms, including neoplasms of lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues 22,147 26.4
4 Diseases of heart 16,261 19.4

LEASING CAUSE BY FAR: CAR ACCIDENT

just remember next time you get in your car... you're asking for it!!!

now.. go fuck yourselves
I agree with you 100% I even posted "freak accident" on my uhh friends science blog.
