Turns out it was my fault and everything is all better now. I love rackshack.net never been a problem and you can't beat the prices they have. If you don't need your hand held then they are the ones to go with.

if it was rackhouse.net this would have been strange, but rackshack.net... the name says it all.

It appears that they have cheap prices, but it is cause they rape you on setup fees, Who the fuck pays 400 dollar setup fees for a simple server

even with the set up fee no one can beat them. I understand they have no support they expect you to know how to handle your own server. But who else has Un-metered 10 mbps Network Connection
PentiumIII 1GHz - 1GB RAM 40GB Hard Drive for only 399.00 per month with the set up fee comes to less then 450.00 per month. If you can beat those prices then I know a few people who would move to you.

I have 2 dedicated Raqs at Rackshack.net

They have been running for months now without a single downtime and of course no reboot.

As their support sucks, you must know what you are doing.

i've had a raq, then upgraded to a whitebox, and now i have one of the 10mbit boxes. even their cogent line is reliable.. i'm happy. i get what i pay for, so i'm not expecting top-notch of everything. like gallery says, their support is spotty, but if you know what you're doing on your own.. you can manage your own box without any hassles whatsoever.

the network is pretty fast too. and 10mbit for $400 a month.. i'd like to see someone beat that here (of course the debate will be cogent bandwidth vs. your bandwidth.. but still.)

Two of my servers are with RackShack and I've never had a problem. Great systems, great prices. If you think they're a small operation you don't know the first thing about them.

Think about why another host would talk shit about them. They count on you to overpay.

One of my clients was hosted at Rackshack. They had bad memory and their server crashed all the time. After a month of this and 9-10 phone calls & support incidents with no resolution, we finally had to move them to a different host (ServInt).

On about the 4th crash, I called rackshack support to complain and they cut me off and told me that I should really just enter this directly into their tracking system. Like the last three support tickets that I had done that way had worked so well.

We kept telling them there was a hardware problem and they kept just rebooting the machine and closing the ticket with no other action.

Finally, after we had moved all the domains and email off the machine, we just left it down for about a week. We made one last support call just for kicks and I think they noticed the machine was down for a week and had no domains pointing to it or something because they finally did replace the memory. It was too late, of course.

One thing that I learned from this is that you really want to have some sort of monitoring service. It really sucks if your machine is down for a day and you have no idea.

Anyway, I think that Rackshack is fine if you know how to setup a server AND you never plan on having hardware problems.

(I just repaired a pay site for a new client after their hard drive crashed and they didn't have any backups. Please. Always include a backup solution when you price out hosting.)

if you see this kind of error "child pid 4429 exit signal Segmentation fault (11)" in the error log then most likely you have a memory problem.

I helped another webmaster as his sever was down everyday.

I had some doubt about the memory. It was replaced 12 hours after the request and since then everything ran fine for him.

segfaults happen all the time for any number of reasons.

you do know there is a bug in apache right now that will cause children to die, right?

http://httpd.apache.org/info/securit...n_20020620.txt

it's not just for windows either. however, the *nix versions don't completely die, just shed off children processes i believe.

i've created segfaults by using messed up libraries with php functions needing things like GD and such. i've never seen a tie to a segfault in a program to a physical memory error. the programs would not continue to load using the same memory address irregardless. if you have bad memory you'd probably see a lot weirder things than just some child apache processes dying..

Just to make sure everyone read the whole post it was all my fault, my error I was testing something out and did not reconfigure the machine properly.
Rack has always helped me out when I needed. Sure they may have given you a machine with bad memory and yes they should have fixed it faster. But know one is perfect and I am sue they tried to remedy the situation when they realized what was going on. I use them will continue to use them and will reccomend them to other people as long as they have access to a good linux person.
