I have severe fear of flying and am already starting to feel nervous at the tought of this plane trip... I was told to get Ativan which is suppose to really calm me down and make the trip go smooth. I am not too crazy about taking medication but I prefer that then having a 3 hours panic attack. Anybody has the same problem or some advice? I know most people think this phobia is stupid, and I think so too, but I just cant help it once im on the plane

Maybe Valium or something like that. See a doctor to get the right med, you don't want to get sick.

Ativan with a few shots of Vodka will take care of your issue for sure. Good luck!

Thank you guys... But I wont be drinking on the plane if I take meds. Im really sensitive to medication since I never take any... Hell a tylenol makes me sleepy
So far, the Ativan might be the one I'd go for. Xanax I tried once or twice but I still feel kinda nervous... Valium, well if you wanna see me in a wheelchair for 48 hours straight, that's what I should take LOL Cant wait the see the crew laughing at me being TOTALLY knocked out on the way and imagining flying hippos over my head....

The easiest thing I found is to maintain a healthy buzz throughout the entire trip. Don't get ripped but enough to get you mellowed out.

I had a massive fear of flying...but two things cured me...
1. the thought that you have a higher chance of dying from a toaster falling off your kitchen counter and landing in a spot of water on the floor, and electrocuting me.... and 2. Stunt Jets on the Lightspeed Webmaster Adventure Weekend...holy crap!

I have some serious advice for you on this. It helped my cousin get over her own fear of flying.
First of all, statistics show it's safer than driving a car. Think about it: we hear about EVERY plane crash on the news, which really goes to show how rare they are. If we heard about ever car crash we'd never be able to hear about anything else. Secondly, if you're afraid of the bumps and noises that come with flying do this: take a ride in your car. Have someone else drive and sit in the passenger seat. Close your eyes. You'll notice all the same bumps and jolts and weird noises. You're just used to it. Airplanes are "driving" on the air just as cars drive on the road. The road bounces your car all around, and the air does the same to a plane. It's really no different. You're in good hands. You have a highly trained staff flying you, assisted by some of the best computers in existence. You're going to be fine. Those pilots want to get home to their families and the wife with a headache just as much as you want to get home to yours. |

You have a btter chance of being hit by lightning after winning the lottery.
Do you really feel that lucky? Besides, crashing in an airline would be the best way to die. You wont feel shit. It will all be over before you can begin to blink an eye. Then your loved ones will get a nice big settlement from the airline. So all is good. Beats the fuck out of dying of cancer all alone with no friends. |

For myself, distraction helped me a LOT. You need a REALLY good book, or some magazines to hold your attention. Putting on headphones and listening to something you enjoy helps too.

Thanks man.. Good stuff. Actually what really gets to me is those weird 'drops' especially when the plane is descending to proceed to landing. GAwd, I hate those. Ironically the landing is the worse and best part for me. Worse cuz the descending takes forever and best cuz all the weight seems to suddenly get right off my shoulders as soon as I feel that all the wheels are touching the ground... there's nothing more relieving Im telling you :D

Out of all the posts on this thread this is the most accurate. I have severe fear of flying as well, I take Taffil which is a prescribed anti - anxiety pill, which does wonders for me, lat trip I made, I had to fly 6 1/2 hours from Panama to L.A. I took one 1/2 hour before taking off and a second pill after 2 hours in the air and I slept like a baby the rest of the flight. |

Most car crashes do not end in fatality. Most airline crashes do end in fatality. Though I don't think this helped the cause much Mediachick, Honestly you have very little to be afraid of. Fear of death is in all of us, and like someone else noted, if it's your time wouldn't you rather be incinerated in .003s on impact than suffer 3 years with a terminal illness?

This might sound stupid, but it helps me if I watch Top Gun before the flight. Just imagine yourself in an F14 taking off from the deck of a carrier and you're on your way to intercept some Russian MiGs. Any turbulence you encounter is just jetwash, and pretty soon you'll be looking out the window hoping to see rockets flying out from the wings of your plane

The only part of flying that scares most is take off and hopefully landing.
Find yourself a magazine article you really want to read and try to concentrate on it as you take of and land. It does help a bit. If you have not flown before get someone who has to prepare you for the sounds etc (landing gear alerons etc) they scare the hell out of people that are not used to flying. Once you are through the clouds and level out it is all a cake walk from there. Good luck and see you at the show.

Think about getting in your car and driving 12 hours to Virginia, staying in a hotel - spending $3 a gallon for gas and getting a speeding ticket - then waking up the next day and driving another 12 hours and you are only in Jacksonville...... FUCK!!! Then turning around and doing it again on sunday for the return trip.... your ass will be excited to fly!!!!

Google up on what astronauts do to releive anxiety. THe main reason you are all phobic is because you are regularly subjected to unnormal levels of G-force which upset the mind.

You have more chance of dying while you are walking down the street than you do of dying in an airplane crash. And Shok is completely correct, you wouldn't feel a thing and your survivors would be awarded a nice settlement ;)
You'll be fine. What exactly is it about the flying that you are afraid of? Turbulence? Take off? The pilot hitting the ground instead of landing? |

Xanax works good.... I would go this year if I could get a direct flight, I don't want to deal with 3 planes.. each way, last time 3 of the 6 planes I was on or was going to be on had mechanical issues...

oh and I know it doesnt prove anything and chances that a similar accident will happen anytime soon are minimal
same goes for a september 11th scenario but still you can't say that if you die in a plane crash, you dont really feel anything.......

Mediachick, as long as you hear the engines going then you are ok. When you hear them stop in mid air then its time to panic.
